Orioles, Jays seek reversal of fortunes
May 14, 2007 - 1:25 PM Baltimore (18-20) at Toronto (15-22) 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) - Rarely is a loss in the second month considered devastating, but the Baltimore Orioles may not agree after Sunday. Unfortunately, the Toronto Blue Jays already know all too well about heartbreaking losses.
Two teams looking to put aside their own issues and looking to rebound meet at the Rogers Centre when the Blue Jays host the Orioles in the series opener of a three-game set on Monday.
The Orioles received a brilliant performance from starter Jeremy Guthrie on Sunday at Boston and appeared on their way to an easy victory and a series win against the American League East-leading Red Sox. That was before Baltimore's bullpen suffered a major meltdown, allowing all six runs in the final frame of a 6-5 loss.
The Blue Jays have dropped 10 of their last 12 games. Unlike Baltimore, Toronto has injuries to thank for its poor play as they have nine players taking up room on their disabled list, including closer B.J. Ryan and ace Roy Halladay, one of three injured starting pitchers.
That total does not include slugger Troy Glaus, who missed his second straight game with an injured left foot and who the Blue Jays are hoping they do not have to place on the disabled list for the second time this season. He leads the team with a .313 batting average and is the only Blue Jay hitting over .300.
There is reason for hope for Baltimore, though, as they swept a three-game series from the Blue Jays at Camden Yards last month and has won five of the last six meetings overall. L
Looking to extend their recent success against Toronto, the Orioles will turn to ace Erik Bedard (3-2, 4.79 ERA), who has been very sharp in his last two starts despite not being rewarded with a win either time.
The Baltimore ace allowed three hits over seven innings with 10 strikeouts on Wednesday in the Orioles' 1-0, 10-inning victory over Tampa Bay.
Bedard, who is among the major league leaders with 56 strikeouts, has pitched at least six innings in each of his past three outings. The lefthander has struggled on the road, going 2-1 with a 6.56 ERA in four starts.
Bedard is 2-4 with a 5.14 ERA in 10 career starts against the Blue Jays.
Toronto will counter with Tomo Ohka (2-4, 5.53). In his last two starts, the righthander has allowed nine earned runs and 16 hits in 12 innings with six walks and three strikeouts.
Ohka lost a rare matchup of Japanese pitchers Wednesday when he allowed three runs over 4 2/3 innings in a 9-3 loss to Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Boston Red Sox. He is 2-1 with a 1.65 ERA in three career games against the Orioles, but this will be his first appearance against them since 2001.
