Glaus leads another late rally against Orioles

May 15, 2007 - 4:12 AM TORONTO (Ticker) -- Following through in the late innings has to be on the mind of the Baltimore Orioles. This time, Troy Glaus made the bullpen pay.

Glaus hit the tie-breaking home run in the bottom of the eighth as the Toronto Blue Jays posted a 5-3 victory over the Orioles in the series opener of a three-game set on Monday.

With Toronto down, 3-2, in the sixth, Glaus hit an RBI single off Baltimore starter Erik Bedard to tie the game at 3-3. In his next at-bat, Glaus sent a pitch from Orioles reliever Danys Baez (0-2) over the fence in deep left for a two-run shot that gave the Blue Jays a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.

"Today was a good day all around; we pitched well, we hit, it was a really nice win that we haven't had in a while," Glaus said.

Glaus, who had missed the previous two contests due to an injured left foot, had two hits and three RBI in helping the Blue Jays put a halt to a stretch in which Toronto had lost 10 of 12 games. The Blue Jays have been ravaged by injuries this season, with nine players on the disabled list.

"It's just a matter of being able to deal with the pain", said Glaus, referring to his troublesome foot. "It is the epitome of day-to-day."

Casey Janssen (1-0) retired both Baltimore batters he faced in the eighth before handing the ball over to new closer Jeremy Accardo, who worked around a single from Melvin Mora to nail down his second save in as many chances.

"Any reliever's goal is to be in that situation where it's that moment, it's all on the line," Accardo said.

The scoreless frame by Accardo continues an impressive streak by the reliever, as he has yet to allow a run in the 17 2/3 innings he has pitched this season.

"I'm just going to try to keep throwing my pitches where I'm throwing them, try to make them hit my pitches and stay ahead and attack the zone," Accardo said.

Baez had his second rough outing in a row, as he gave up Glaus' blast to take the loss. On Sunday, he assisted in the six-run rally by giving up two runs without recording an out as the Red Sox came back from five runs down in the ninth to grab a 6-5 victory.

"All the losses are frustrating whether you hold the lead or don't hold the lead, no loss is fun," manager Sam Perlozzo said. "It's not a big deal really (losing a couple games) when you get down to it, we're together 162 games and all of spring training, you probably have more fights with your wife."

Nick Markakis and Jay Gibbons each homered for Baltimore, which dropped their third straight contest following a four-game winning streak.

"It's tough anytime you lose, that's baseball, (the) good thing about it is we come out tomorrow and try to win the series and that's what we're going to do," Markakis said.
