Peacock helps Nats blank Mets
Sep 15, 2011 - 4:53 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Michael Morse and Jayson Werth both knocked in a run to back five scoreless innings by Brad Peacock as the Nationals took a 2-0 victory over the Mets in the third test of a four-game set.Peacock (1-0) allowed two hits and three walks in his first career start. He pitched 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen September 6 in his only other major league appearance.
"After I threw that first pitch I was fine," Peacock said. "I just made sure I took deep breaths out there and settled in nicely."
Chris Marrero went 2-for-4 and was the only player in the game to record multiple hits in Washington's fifth win in its last six games, including four straight.
Mike Pelfrey (7-12) allowed two unearned runs on six hits and two walks while fanning six through seven innings.
Justin Turner's pinch-hit double in the seventh inning was the Mets' only extra-base hit as they dropped their fifth straight game and the seventh in their last eight games.
Ian Desmond reached base with one out in the third on David Wright's fielding error at third. Two batters later, Ryan Zimmerman walked and was followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Morse and Werth to bring home the only runs of the game.
Peacock allowed just one baserunner throughout the first three innings, but loaded the bases in the fourth. Ruben Tejada led off with a single for the Mets' first hit of the game and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lucas Duda then walked and after Peacock recorded two outs, he gave a free pass to Jason Bay to fill the bags. But Josh Satin, making his second career start, popped up to third to end the inning.
Tom Gorzelanny stranded a runner on third in the sixth and seventh innings, Tyler Clippard tossed a 1-2-3 eighth and Drew Storen worked around walking the first two batters in the ninth to earn his 37th save of the year.
"We're getting some balls we can hit but we're just not hitting them. It's just one of those things that clubs go through," Mets manager Terry Collins said about his team's struggles with runners in scoring position.
