Mariners, Indians meet in Cleveland

Sep 19, 2011 - 3:46 PM (Sports Network) - Lefty David Huff aims again for his first career defeat of the Seattle Mariners today when the Cleveland Indians host them at Progressive Field in the make-up from a May rainout.

Huff has started twice and lost twice against Seattle in his career, allowing 13 hits and eight runs in 8 1/3 innings with five walks and three strikeouts.

He's not won overall since Aug. 29, when he tossed six shutout innings of three-hit ball for a 2-1 defeat of Oakland.

In three starts since, the 27-year-old has lost to Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox and Texas on the road while allowing 19 hits and 16 runs in 16 1/3 innings.

He's 1-1 in two home starts in 2011.

For the Mariners, 25-year-old lefty Charlie Furbush tries to end a five-start skid that stretches back more than a month. The former fourth-round pick of the Detroit Tigers last won on Aug. 14, when he tossed seven innings in a 5-3 defeat of the Boston Red Sox.

He's lost decisions in all five subsequent starts while seeing his earned run average swell from 4.01 to 4.86.

Furbush started the season with the Tigers and was 1-3 in 17 appearances before coming to Seattle in a deal that sent pitcher Doug Fister to Detroit on July 30.

On Sunday in Minnesota, the Indians used a six-run seventh inning to charge back and defeat the Twins, 6-5, to sweep the three-game series at Target Field.

Cleveland starter Justin Masterson (12-10) lasted six innings, allowing three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and one walk. He struck out three.

In Seattle, Adrian Beltre hit a two-run homer to back 6 2/3 scoreless innings from Matt Harrison, as the Texas Rangers defeated the Mariners, 3-0, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Felix Hernandez (14-13) allowed three runs on nine hits over seven innings for the Mariners, who went 4-6 on a 10-game homestand.

Cleveland has won five of its eight matchups with the Mariners.
