Yankees look to right ship vs. rival Mets

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees look to snap out of the doldrums when they take on the New York Mets Saturday in the middle of game of the three-game "Subway Series" at Shea Stadium.

Off to a horrendous start, the Yankees now are 10 games out of first place in the American League for the first time since manager Joe Torre took over the team in 1996. After two more contests against the Mets, they will open a three-game set against the rival Boston Red Sox, who sit atop the AL East.

On Friday, Oliver Perez pitched 7 2/3 solid innings to outduel Andy Pettitte and Endy Chavez hit a two-run homer as the Mets edged the Yankees, 3-2, in the opener of the three-game series.

Paul Lo Duca had a pair of doubles and Carlos Delgado delivered a sacrifice fly for the Mets, who have won eight of their last 10 games.

On the other hand, it has not been as successful a season for the Yankees, who generally entered the annual "Subway Series" as the more prominent team in New York. But the 2007 edition has a different feel.

The Mets are in first place in the National League East while the Yankees entered the contest well off the pace in their division.

They will look to get it back on track behind Darrell Rasner (1-2, 3.28 ERA), who is looking to avoid a third consecutive loss. He allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings of a 3-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners last Friday.

Rasner will be making his first career appearance against the Mets, who will counter with veteran Tom Glavine (4-1, 3.31).

Glavine is looking for his fourth consecutive victory. The veteran lefthander allowed four runs and six hits with four walks in six innings but did not figure in the decision in a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

Glavine is 4-2 with a 3.71 ERA in eight regular-season starts vs. the Yankees in his career.
