Wright homers twice as Mets top struggling Yankees

May 20, 2007 - 1:34 AM FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- David Wright and the New York Mets continue to kick the New York Yankees when they're down.

Wright hit a pair of two-run homers and Tom Glavine recorded his 295th career victory as the Mets built a six-run lead before holding off the reeling Yankees, 10-7, on Saturday in the Subway Series.

Endy Chavez tied a career high with four hits, including a ground-ball single off the right hand of Darrell Rasner (1-3) that knocked the Yankees starter out of the game after just nine pitches.

Rasner suffered a fractured right index finger, beginning a long afternoon for the Yankees, who lost for the seventh time in nine games and saw yet another pitcher go down with an injury. Rasner could miss up to three months.

"It's something you have to deal with and move on," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "We're going to turn it around. I wish I could give you a date."

The Yankees will use their 11th different starting pitcher this season when Tyler Clippard works Sunday in an effort to avoid a three-game series sweep.

It was a far more enjoyable day for Mets manager Willie Randolph, who in the morning gave the commencement address at Fordham University in the Bronx. His daughter, Ciara, was among the graduates.

"It was kind of like a doubleheader," Randolph said.

Randolph was back at Shea Stadium in time to watch Glavine (5-1) work six-plus innings and allowed three runs and nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts. One of the hits was a leadoff home run to Robinson Cano in the second.

"I thought I was OK, but it certainly wasn't a game where I felt in command of everything," Glavine said.

Cano committed three errors at second base, the first Yankee to commit three errors in a game since Alex Rodriguez last July 17 against Seattle.

Wright connected in the second and third innings off reliever Mike Myers to help the Mets win for the ninth time in 11 games. He recorded his eighth multi-homer game and first since June 26 last season against Cincinnati.

"You have to be able to put pressure on them," said Wright, who was intentionally walked in his next three plate appearances. "We are able to weather the storm."

The Yankees made it an 8-6 game with three runs in the eighth.

Rodriguez and Jorge Posada hit back-to-back home runs off Scott Schoeneweis, who left after walking Bobby Abreu. Josh Phelps delivered an RBI double off Pedro Feliciano.

But the Mets avoided further damage when Aaron Heilman retired Derek Jeter on a groundout with runners on first and third to end the inning.

Billy Wagner worked his way out of a jam in the ninth to close out the victory for the Mets. The Yankees drew within 10-7 when Abreu tapped a grounder back to Wagner, who bobbled the ball before throwing wildly to home, allowing Rodriguez to score.

But Wagner closed the door from there, striking out Cano and Phelps to end the contest.

"The record says we're better than the Yankees, but that can change in a hurry," Wagner said. "We're not counting them out."

The Mets scored three times in the first. After a single by Jose Reyes, Chavez bounced a one-hop grounder that deflected off Rasner's hand for a single. Rasner tried a few warmup tosses, but was unable to continue.

Myers relieved and allowed a sacrifice fly to Carlos Beltran.

One batter later, Wright belted a mammoth homer to left field estimated at 460 feet to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.

After Cano homered in the top of the second, the Mets responded with a run in their half of the frame. Damion Easley singled and was sacrificed to second by Glavine. Reyes reached on the second error of the game by Cano and Chavez delivered an RBI single.

Chavez was of the heroes of Friday's win with a two-run homer.

Carlos Delgado singled to lead off the third and Wright hit a blast that popped out of the glove of center fielder Johnny Damon and over the fence, giving the Mets a 6-2 lead.

"We couldn't help our pitchers out. There were plays we should have made," Damon said. "To not be able to catch a ball at the wall, that's embarrassing."

The Mets added two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Delgado and a run-scoring groundout by Shawn Green.

Pinch hitter Julio Franco delivered an RBI single in the eighth. Cano threw wildly to first, allowing a second run to score.

Jeter and Posada each extended their hitting streaks to 14 games.
