Quentin drives in five as Diamondbacks overcome Rockies

May 22, 2007 - 6:20 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Brandon Webb still hasn't figured out the Colorado Rockies but Carlos Quentin did.

Quentin hit a pair of home runs and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a three-game series on Monday.

Colorado rallied from a 4-2 deficit to take a 5-4 lead with a three-run seventh inning. Kaz Matsui, who was activated from the disabled list earlier Monday, highlighted the frame with a two-run double with two outs. Matsui had missed 32 games with back spasms.

"What a great shot in the arm he was," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "To strike the ball the way he did and play good defense, he looked really good."

Quentin tied the game at 5-5 with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame. He put Arizona ahead, 4-2, with his first homer of the game and gave the Diamondbacks the lead for good an inning later.

"We felt him starting to come around with the last few games on the road trip," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "We probably don't win that game without Carlos Quentin, going out on a limb."

Orlando Hudson led off the eighth with a triple to deep center field. Mark Reynolds and Stephen Drew each drew a walk later in the inning to load the bases and Quentin then belted a sacrifice fly to deep center off of Jeremy Affeldt (1-1) to score Hudson.

"Anytime you get some results and you are swinging OK it helps, even when you aren't swing the bat well it also helps a ton," Quentin said. "I am happy I was able to contribute, especially as of late, it felt really good."

Doug Slaten (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win. Jose Valverde, who was named co-National League Player of the Week on Monday, pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 19 chances.

Quentin's big night helped Arizona overcome another sub-par effort by Webb, who just can't figure out the Rockies.

The reigning NL Cy Young winner, Webb entered Monday with a record of 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in three starts against Colorado this season. He allowed five runs and six hits in six innings of a 5-3 loss to the Rockies on Wednesday and was no better Monday.

Webb yielded a pair of homers to Brad Hawpe on Wednesday and was victimized again by the Rockies' right fielder in the second, as Hawpe's solo blast gave Colorado a 1-0 lead.

Hawpe struck out to lead off the seventh but Webb let up and the Rockies took advantage.

"I ended up getting Hawpe out, miraculously somehow, I'm not sure how I did that," Webb said. "I was feeling pretty good after that. I ended up getting two outs then they got a couple of guys on base and they got a couple of big hits."

Matsui finished with two hits and three RBI and Willy Taveras had three hits for Colorado, which has lost six of its last eight games.

"When you get five runs off Webb you have to find a way to win a ballgame," Hurdle said. "Everyone is giving what they can give and it hasn't been enough and we have to find a way to clean some things up in some certain areas and keep moving forward.
