Suppan, Fielder carry Brewers over Dodgers
May 22, 2007 - 6:59 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Jeff Suppan got back on track and Prince Fielder flexed his muscles for the Milwaukee Brewers.Suppan broke out of his slump and Fielder posted his sixth career multi-homer game as the Brewers rolled to a 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night.
The righthanded Suppan (6-4) allowed four runs and six hits in six-plus innings to get his first triumph after dropping back-to-back starts to the New York Mets and Philadelphia.
In his Milwaukee debut, Suppan gave up two runs and seven hits in a 5-4 setback to the Dodgers at Miller Park on April 4. With Monday's win he improved to 4-4 against Los Angeles all-time.
"My basic focus against a team like this is just make pitches," Suppan said. "The defense played pretty well tonight and I used them to my advantage."
Suppan carried a shutout into the sixth inning before giving up an RBI single to Nomar Garciaparra and a two-run homer to former National League MVP Jeff Kent as the Dodgers closed to within 8-3.
"(Suppan) ran out of gas and then just kind of hit a wall," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "He pitched very well up to that point."
Fielder opened the scoring with his 13th blast in the second, Rickie Weeks roped an RBI double one frame later and Johnny Estrada added a homer in the fourth off Dodgers starter Brett Tomko (1-5) for 3-0 lead.
"I'm just trying to be aggressive with my hands and keep things up the middle," Fielder said.
Milwaukee continued to give Suppan some run support in the sixth as Dodgers reliever Chad Billingsley entered for Tomko with two on and one out. Craig Counsell had a run-scoring single, Weeks hit a two-run single and Tony Gwynn Jr. capped the Brewer's five-run inning with a two-run double to extend their lead to 8-0.
Weeks had a career-high four hits after missing the last four games due to a sore wrist.
"I can't stand to be away from the game for a long time," Weeks said. "I felt really good tonight, and I'm just happy I was able to help the team win." Fielder delivered his second homer in the ninth to help push the Brewers' NL-leading total to 61 homers. As a rookie last season, the 23-year-old registered 28 homers.
"The ball doesn't go to well here," Fielder said. "As long as it's a hit then I'm happy. I just happened to hit two of them out of the park."
Tomko surrendered five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 frames as he remains winless in five starts at home this season. He struck out five and walked two in falling to 7-2 against the Brewers.
"I thought I made a lot of quality pitches," Tomko said. "But I walked a guy, gave up a couple of hits, and threw a couple of bad pitches, and that hurt me."
Wilson Betemit hit a run-scoring single and Luis Gonzalez added a solo blast in the eighth for Los Angeles, which has lost four straight games.
"We gotta be patient. We got a good team out there in that clubhouse," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "We like our team, but we're just struggling a bit right now."
