Vogelsong, Sanchez close out set in San Fran

May 3, 2012 - 2:35 PM (Sports Network) - One year removed from an All-Star appearance, San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong is still searching for his first win of the 2012 season. Vogelsong hopes to get it this afternoon in the finale of a three-game series with the Miami Marlins.

Vogelsong is 0-1 with a 4.19 earned run average in three starts this season and has recorded back-to-back no-decisions. In a 6-5 win at Cincinnati a week ago, Vogelsong surrendered four runs and seven hits in six innings of work. He struck out five batters and issued two walks.

The right-hander has given up at least two runs in each of his three appearances this season with five or more K's in that time. Vogelsong, a Kutztown University product, is 1-2 with a 2.16 ERA in six career games (2 starts) against the Marlins.

San Francisco could use a strong pitching performance in order to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Marlins, who squeezed out a 3-2 win in 10 innings last night on Giancarlo Stanton's solo homer in the top of the 10th. Giants reliever Santiago Casilla served up the blast and was dealt the loss.

The Giants were down 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth and rallied to even the score on an RBI single by Joaquin Arias and a bunt single thanks to Gregor Blanco that later scored Arias. Arias, Brandon Belt and Melky Cabrera all finished with two hits for San Francisco, which lost the series opener to the Marlins on Tuesday and has dropped five of its last eight games.

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval left the game in the sixth inning with an injured left hand and will be re-evaluated Thursday. He was 0-for-2 at the plate and manager Bruce Bochy was asked if Sandoval's injury is a concern.

"Quite a bit, to be honest," Bochy told the club's website. "For him to come out of the game, there's a lot of concern here. We know what this guy means to our club, our offense. We have a couple of guys out already with [Freddy] Sanchez and [Aubrey] Huff. You just hope for the best right now. That's all we can do."

Barry Zito lasted just 3 2/3 innings and was reached for two runs -- one earned -- on two hits and seven walks. He only struck out one batter.

"I didn't feel good tonight. I had bad rhythm," Zito said. "I think I was rushing my delivery a bit when guys got on base."

San Francisco is 2-3 on a nine-game homestand and will begin a three-game series this weekend versus the Milwaukee Brewers.

Miami received a big lift from Stanton last night to win for just the third time in 11 tries and will be aiming for a sweep Thursday. Stanton ended with three hits and Omar Infante added an RBI for the Marlins, who have won their first two tests on a nine-game road trip.

"It's what I've been waiting on for a month now," Stanton said of his home run. "I never really got down on myself for not hitting homers or none of that. I knew it was going to come around sometime. It's finally here."

Stanton homered for the second night in a row and for the third time in four games. Carlos Zambrano did not record a decision with seven shutout innings and five strikeouts, while Steve Cishek collected the win for holding the Giants off the board over the final two innings of the game.

After this set the Marlins will head to San Diego for three games against the Padres at Petco Park.

Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez hasn't recorded a decision since winning his season debut back on April 9 at Philadelphia. He will get the ball today against the Giants and has posted three consecutive no-decisions, including one in last Saturday's 3-2 win over Arizona.

Sanchez fired seven innings of two-run ball for a second start in a row and struck out a career-high 14 batters with four walks. The 14 K's matches the second-highest total in team history. The righty is 1-0 with a 2.73 earned run average in four starts and 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA in three career starts against San Francisco.

Miami was 4-2 last season versus the Giants.
