Cain hopes for some run support in finale with Brewers

May 6, 2012 - 2:41 PM (Sports Network) = Matt Cain hopes for a little run support this afternoon when the San Francisco Giants play the rubber match of their three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers at AT&T Park.

Cain has lost his last two starts, but the Giants have managed just three total runs in those contests. That on the heels of him throwing nine scoreless innings against Philadelphia without getting a win.

"That's one of those situations where more times than not, we're going to get some runs," Cain said. "If those guys keep getting those chances, it's going to be fun."

Cain had his streak of 21 consecutive scoreless innings snapped in a loss to Miami on Tuesday, as he allowed two runs and six hits in eight innings, dropping him to 1-2 on the year to go along with a 2.35 earned run average.

In seven starts versus the Brewers, Cain is 2-5 with a 4.70 ERA.

Run support was problem for Milwaukee starter Shaun Marcum his last time out as well, as he scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings to Milwaukee only to walk away without a decision in his team's 2-0 loss.

"Really good. Really mixed his speeds well," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said. "This should be a ballgame to really get him locked in."

Marcum hasn't received a decision in his last three starts and is 1-1 on the year with a 3.19 ERA. He's also 1-1 in three starts versus the Giants with a 4.00 ERA.

San Francisco evened this series at game apiece on Saturday, as Madison Bumgarner tossed seven innings of one-run ball and the Giants rolled to a 5-2 win.

Bumgarner (5-1), who also added an RBI double, gave up just six hits and one walk while striking out five. Javier Lopez finished off the eighth after Guillermo Mota served up a leadoff home run and Santiago Casilla tossed a scoreless ninth to record his fifth save of the season.

Buster Posey finished 2-for-4 with an RBI single, while Hector Sanchez, Conor Gillaspie and Brett Pill had an RBI apiece for the Giants, who snapped a four- game skid.

"We have to keep going out there and playing with determination," Giants outfielder Angel Pagan said. "We have to keep that same momentum and keep playing hard and we'll be fine."

Ryan Braun cracked a solo homer and Alex Gonzalez added an RBI single for the Brewers, who have dropped three of their last four contests.

Randy Wolf (2-3) was tagged for four runs on nine hits while striking out three and did not walk a batter over six full frames.

Milwaukee split its six meetings with the Giants last season, but has lost three of its last five in San Francisco.
