Reds, Brewers continue set at Miller Park

May 8, 2012 - 3:02 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Homer Bailey makes his ninth career start against the Milwaukee Brewers and seeks his first career victory against them tonight when the Cincinnati Reds visit Miller Park for the second of three games between the National League Central Division rivals.

The seventh overall pick in the 2004 draft, Bailey debuted with the Reds three years later and won 25 games through his initial 78 starts prior to 2012 - including eight starts against the Brewers in which he's gone 0-3 with a 5.63 earned run average in 46 1/3 innings.

He's started five games so far this year and won one of three decisions while allowing 34 hits and 17 runs across 31 innings, walking 10 batters and striking out 20 with an opposition batting average of .276.

He split two road starts in April while giving up seven runs in 13 innings.

For the Brewers, Mexican-born right-hander Yovani Gallardo tries to snap a four-start drought.

A 17-game winner last season for the division-champion Brewers, Gallardo split his initial two decisions of 2012, but has not won since scoring a 2-1 victory over the Cubs in Chicago on April 11.

He's pitched 22 innings, allowed 28 hits and 14 runs since while going 0-2 with a pair of no-decisions.

Milwaukee has been outscored in the four appearances, 26-7, and is 2-4 overall in the six games in which Gallardo has pitched.

The 26-year-old is 3-3 in 11 career starts against Cincinnati.

On Monday, Jay Bruce smacked a three-run homer as part of a five-run fourth inning that helped propel the Reds past the Brewers, 6-1.

Zack Cozart also hit a solo shot in the inning for the Reds, who have won four of five. Bronson Arroyo (2-1) picked up the win by scattering six hits and one run with nine strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.

"Getting a big lead early gave Bronson some room to breathe," Bruce said.

Ryan Braun homered for the Brewers, who saw Marco Estrada (0-2) surrender five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts over seven frames as they dropped their third in a row.

"(Estrada) started missing his location (in the fourth inning)," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "He gave up five, six hits that one inning and two, three the rest of the game. He threw a great game except for that inning."

The Reds and Brewers split 16 meetings a season ago, with Milwaukee winning the final four encounters.
