Peavy, White Sox close out set with Indians

May 9, 2012 - 2:37 PM (Sports Network) - Resurgent right-hander Jake Peavy looks for his first win of May after scoring three victories in April when the Chicago White Sox close out a four-game series with the host Cleveland Indians tonight at Progressive Field.

The Indians opened on top in the series with a doubleheader sweep on Monday, but the White Sox got on the board when Alex Rios tripled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning in a 5-3 win Tuesday.

Paul Konerko singled off Chris Perez (0-1) to begin the 10th and pinch-runner Brent Lillibridge came around to score on Rios' second triple of the season. Rios then hustled home on a fielder's choice.

Addison Reed retired the Indians in order in the bottom of the frame to earn his second save.

The Indians had won four straight over the White Sox before Tuesday's loss.

The 30-year-old Peavy was a two-time All-Star and the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner with the San Diego Padres before heading to the White Sox in a five-player deal on July 31, 2009.

He pitched in just 38 games due to a variety of injuries after the deal and had just 17 wins with the White Sox before racking up three in his initial four starts in the season's first month.

A 1-0 decision to Boston was his first loss of the season on April 28, despite a complete-game performance by Peavy, who allowed four hits, walked one and struck out seven.

He had a no-decision in a subsequent start at Detroit on May 4, allowing three runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings of Chicago's 5-4 loss to the Tigers.

The White Sox won his first four outings while outscoring foes, 21-6.

Peavy is 2-3 in seven meetings with Cleveland with a 4.00 earned run average.

For the Indians, 24-year-old Venezuelan righty Jeanmar Gomez can stay unbeaten against the White Sox in his third career start against them.

Gomez won a pair of decisions in his first two games against Chicago - both starts - before a hitless two-inning relief appearance against them on April 11 in the Indians' 10-6 defeat.

In that game, he walked none and struck out three.

In four subsequent starts this season, he's 2-1 and has given up 18 hits and seven runs in 20 1/3 innings.
