Angels return home to battle A's
May 14, 2012 - 2:53 PM (Sports Network) - The American League West's last-place team, the LA Angels of Anaheim, are probably glad to get back to familiar surroundings after an inconsistent road trip and will host the Oakland Athletics in back-to-back games at Angel Stadium. The Angels lost two of three in Texas over the weekend and went 3-3 on a six- game road trip, which culminated with Sunday's 13-6 loss to the Rangers. Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer, while Vernon Wells and Kendrys Morales added solo shots for the Angels, who fell to 15-20 on the season.
Jered Weaver drew the start for the Halos and lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs on 10 hits. He was attempting to become the second American League pitcher to reach six wins this season.
"Those guys are good over there," Weaver said of the AL West-leading Rangers. "If you fall behind and let them get into hitter's counts they're going to do some damage on you. They've been doing it to a lot of people all year."
Weaver has gone 1-7 in his last 12 starts at Texas.
Anaheim will also host the Chicago White Sox for two games on the residency and hopes Dan Haren can rebound from two poor outings when he takes the mound this evening. Haren battled a bout of back stiffness in his last outing, a 5-0 loss at Minnesota, and gave up all five runs on eight hits and two walks over just 3 2/3 innings.
"The only time it really bugs me is when I'm going 100 percent on the mound," Haren said of his back issue. "I got after it a few pitches in the bullpen and I felt a lot better. I'm trying to just give it as much rest as I can. I'm sure it'll be fine."
Haren also gave up five runs -- three earned -- in seven innings of a 5-0 setback to Toronto on May 3, and is 1-3 with a 4.19 earned run average in seven starts this season. The right-hander did not record a decision in a 5-3 loss to Oakland on April 17 this season and held the A's to a run in 6 2/3 innings of work. He is 2-2 with a 3.45 ERA in seven career starts against the Athletics, a club he spent three years with from 2005-07. He made 34 starts in each of those years and averaged 14 wins per season in that time.
Oakland went 3-3 on a six-game homestand and split a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers at the Coliseum. The Athletics were going for a series win, but dropped a 3-1 decision Sunday in the finale.
Jarrod Parker was saddled with the loss for allowing a pair of runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, while Seth Smith homered to provide the offense. Tigers ace Justin Verlander tossed seven strong innings of two-hit ball to shut the A's down with ease.
"[Verlander's] one of the best pitchers in the game," said A's infielder Eric Sogard. "We did our best."
Brandon Inge did not play Sunday and has four home runs and 16 runs batted in over his last six games. He owns nine homers and 38 RBI in his career against the Angels.
The A's will begin a seven-game road trip tonight against the Angels, Rangers and Giants, and are slated to hand Tyson Ross the ball Monday. Ross has lost his last three starts and previously took the mound in Wednesday's 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Blue Jays. He was reached for three runs in 5 2/3 innings to fall to 1-3 in five starts to go along with a 7.71 ERA.
Ross, a right-hander, threw six innings of two-run ball in a 5-3 win at the Angels on April 17 for a no-decision. He is 0-1 with a 2.61 ERA in five career games (3 starts) against Anaheim.
Oakland has won three of four meetings with the Halos this season.
