Giants welcome Diamondbacks to the bay

May 28, 2012 - 2:39 PM (Sports Network) - Melky Cabrera has been seeing the ball pretty well at the plate this month and the San Francisco Giants are reaping the benefits.

The hot-hitting Cabrera and the Giants are back home by the bay and look to do some damage on a seven-game residency when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game series at AT&T Park. Cabrera helped lead the Giants to a 3-2 win and a split of a four-game series against the Miami Marlins on Sunday in the finale of a seven-game road trip (4-3).

Cabrera, who entered the game batting .404 with 16 RBI and 19 runs, finished 4-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored. He registered his major league- leading 24th multi-hit game and added to his hit total of 73, which is tops in the National League. He has 46 hits in the month of May and is five away from tying Randy Winn for the San Francisco-era record for the most hits in a month. Winn accomplished the feat in September of 2005.

"Melky was a one-man show this week," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. "He hit everything we threw...he's a pretty good hitter."

Matt Cain surrendered two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win for the Giants, who have won seven of their last 11 games, but still sit behind Los Angeles for the NL West lead.

San Francisco is slated to take on the Chicago Cubs on this homestand and will send Barry Zito to the mound in Monday's opener with the D-Backs. He is 3-2 with a 3.53 earned run average in nine starts this season and had a personal two-game winning streak cut short in last Wednesday's 8-5 loss at Milwaukee, as the left-hander was reached for eight runs -- four earned -- in a season- low three innings.

Zito has allowed 14 earned runs over his last four starts and will try to beat Arizona for the second time this season. In a 7-3 win on May 13 in the desert, Zito held the hosts to three runs through six innings, improving to 4-8 with a 5.36 ERA in 17 career games (16 starts) against Arizona.

Arizona will begin a six-game road trip against San Francisco and San Diego tonight and just went 3-3 on a six-game homestand. It won the last two portions of a three-game series versus the Milwaukee Brewers, including Sunday's 4-3 win in the finale.

The Diamondbacks tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead for good and received RBI hits from Jason Kubel, Ryan Roberts and Henry Blanco. Aaron Hill had three hits and a run scored for Arizona, which has won three of four and seven of 12 games. Paul Goldschmidt homered in a winning cause.

Arizona starter Daniel Hudson, who was activated off the 15-day disabled list prior to the game, allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three in five full frames. Bryan Shaw earned the win after getting the final two outs in the sixth inning.

"Overall I felt good. I kind of lost command there towards the end, but we got the win so that's the important part," said Hudson.

D-Backs catcher Miguel Montero could return to action today after he missed the last five games with a groin injury. He just signed a five-year, $60 million contract over the weekend.

Trevor Cahill is scheduled to start Monday and will be throwing to either Henry Blanco or Montero. Cahill is 0-2 in his last four starts and did not figure into the decision of an 8-7 loss to the Dodgers last Tuesday. He pitched well, throwing six innings of one-run ball, but remained 2-4 in nine starts with a 3.74 ERA.

Cahill, a righty, lost to the Giants in a 5-2 setback on May 12 and permitted four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. It was his first career loss against the Giants and is 3-1 with a 2.16 ERA through five starts in this series.

Arizona has won four of six matchups with the Giants this season -- all in the Valley of the Sun. The D-Backs are 12-4 in the previous 16 meetings between the two ballclubs.
