Cahill seeks win column as D-Backs wrap set with Padres

Cahill looks to win his first game in over a month as the Diamondbacks finish up a three-game series with the San Diego Padres.
Cahill is 0-3 with a 4.85 earned run average in five outings since he beat the Nationals on May 1 with 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He scattered six hits and a walk on that day, but was touched for four runs on eight hits in six frames of a loss at the Giants on Monday.
That dropped the 24-year-old to 2-5 with a 3.96 ERA in 10 starts this season.
Cahill faced the Padres for the first time in his career on April 10, with the former Oakland hurler making his Arizona debut. Cahill struggled with his command, walking six over six innings and getting a no-decision in the Diamondbacks' 4-2 victory.
The Padres will move Eric Stults up to pitch Sunday's finale after designating Jeff Suppan for assignment on Friday. Stults, though, will still be on regular rest because of an off day on Thursday.
The 32-year-old lefty has made three starts since being claimed off waivers from the White Sox and suffered a loss at the Cubs on Tuesday. He was charged with four runs on seven hits and a walk in 6 1/3 frames, not allowing a run over the first four innings of the outing.
Stults still fell to 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA with the Padres and is 2-0 in four career meetings with the Diamondbacks, including two starts, despite a 6.59 ERA.
Arizona took advantage of some gifts from San Diego to win Saturday's meeting 4-2. Gerardo Parra, getting the start in place of the slumping Justin Upton, scored the go-ahead run on a balk call in the seventh and later added an insurance run by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
Upton, meanwhile, was given the day off as he is mired in a 3-for-20 skid at the plate.
Paul Goldschmidt homered to extend his career-high hitting streak to 11 games in a row and Daniel Hudson allowed two runs over eight innings in his second start since returning from a right shoulder injury.
"I was on a pitch count my first time," Hudson said. "To be able to finally let loose, go out and throw strikes, get early outs, was pretty uplifting for me."
Diamondbacks had suffered their third loss in four games with Friday's 7-1 setback in the series opener.
Joe Thatcher was called for the balk in the seventh, though he disputed the call.
"For a tie ballgame in that inning to be decided on a balk call, to me it wasn't the right thing to do," Thatcher said.
Edinson Volquez gave up two runs on four hits and five walks in a six-inning start for San Diego, which lost for the seventh time in eight games.
The Diamondbacks have won 13 of their past 19 against the Padres, also taking two of three at San Diego from April 10-12.
