Cahill, Diamondbacks blank Padres

Jun 4, 2012 - 4:12 AM San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Trevor Cahill tossed his second career shutout, Miguel Montero and Gerardo Parra both hit a two-run homer and the Diamondbacks defeated the Padres, 6-0, in the finale of a three-game series.

Cahill (3-5) allowed six hits, walked three and struck out five to earn up his first win since May 1. He was 0-3 in his previous five starts.

Paul Goldschmidt hit his second homer in as many days for Arizona, which has won three of four, including the last two games of this series.

"Our goal is to try to win every series right now," said Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson. "Of course you would like to sweep it but if you can win it that's a positive step in the right direction. That's how you pick up momentum."

Eric Stults (1-2) took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Goldschmidt went 2-for-3 and extended his career-best hit streak to 12 games with a homer in the second inning, which gave the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead.

Montero's two-run blast came in the sixth, as did a sacrifice fly from Jason Kubel. He drove in Ryan Roberts, who reached with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error from first baseman Yonder Alonso.

Josh Bell drew a leadoff walk an inning later and Parra followed with a homer to left-center to cap the scoring.

Padres infielder Logan Forsythe, who was activated from the 60-day disabled list prior to the game, was caught stealing home after hitting a leadoff triple in the fifth inning. He began the eighth with a double and Everth Cabrera followed with a walk, but Alexi Amarista flew out and Chris Denorfia grounded into a double play, ending the threat.

"He had a lot of good stuff working," Forsythe said of Cahill. "I guess I was patient enough, saw a couple pitches and...luckily I got a couple hits."

Game Notes

Cahill's last shutout was August 2, 2010, versus Kansas City...Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton went 1-for-4 and has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games...In addition to Forsythe, the Padres activated outfielder Mark Kotsay from the 15-day disabled list and he went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Kotsay went on the DL May 19 with a lower back strain. Forsythe had been on the DL since March 26 with a fractured left foot, which required surgery.
