Blue Jays hope to break the brooms out in Chicago
Jun 7, 2012 - 2:34 PMVideo
That may be easier said than done, however, as the Jays haven't broke the brooms out in Chicago since Sept. 4-6, 1989, at old Comiskey Park. And Toronto will be going up against righty Jake Peavy, who this season has resembled the pitcher who was an NL Cy Young Award winner for San Diego in 2007.
Peavy did not get a decision on Friday against Seattle, but only allowed two runs and three hits in 6 1/3 innings of his team's 7-4 win. He is 6-1 on the year with a 3.05 earned run average.
As well as Peavy has pitched at times, he's also getting 6.22 runs of support per nine innings. He's pitched to a 5.55 ERA over his last four starts, but has an 8.51 run-support average during that span.
Peavy has only faced the Blue Jays twice and is 1-0 against them with a 5.93 ERA.
Toronto, meanwhile, will counter with righty Henderson Alvarez, who has lost his last three decisions and is 3-5 on the year with a 3.75 ERA. Alvarez lost to Boston on Friday, yielding four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
He lost his only other start to the White Sox, but pitched well, giving up two runs in seven innings of a 2-1 loss Sept. 27.
Alvarez will be looking to match a terrific effort from Brandon Morrow on Wednesday. Morrow spun his third shutout of the season, as the Blue Jays took a 4-0 victory.
"When I have fastball command down to both sides of the plate, that's when I've been at my best," said Morrow. "I had that tonight."
Morrow (7-3) fanned five and allowed just two walks and two hits, which came on a pair of singles from A.J. Pierzynski.
Rajai Davis posted a two-run shot, Jose Bautista also homered and Colby Rasmus knocked in the other run for the Blue Jays, who won their third straight contest.
Jose Quintana (1-1) was charged for two runs on nine hits and a walk over six frames to take the loss, the club's third in their last four tries.
"Tonight, he just continued to prove that he's going to get another shot," said Chicago manager Robin Ventura about Quintana. "He's proved he can pitch up here."
On the injury front Chicago first baseman Paul Konerko missed his third straight game following a minor procedure to remove a bone chip in his wrist. Konerko, of course, leads the AL in batting with a .366 average. He is questionable for today's finale.
This is the first series between Toronto and Chicago since the Blue Jays won four of seven encounters a season ago.
