Gomez makes spot start for Tribe vs. Rangers

(Sports Network) - Jeanmar Gomez gets a spot start for the Cleveland Indians on Saturday when they continue a three-game series against the Texas Rangers at Progressive Field.

Gomez, who was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, steps in for Roberto Hernandez, who was forced to leave his last start with an ankle injury.

The right-handed Gomez has made 13 starts for the Indians this season, but lost his last three and is 4-7 with a 5.11 ERA in 15 appearances for them this season.

Gomez will be trying to help the Tribe bounce back following another loss in the opener in this set on Friday. Adrian Beltre went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored to power Texas to the 5-3 win.

Michael Young drove in two while David Murphy and Ian Kinsler each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Rangers, who have won three of their last four.

Ryan Dempster (4-1) got the win in the start as he gave up just one unearned run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in six innings.

"I'm just focusing on one start at the time and doing my best whenever I go out there," said Dempster. "I just want to make good pitches and keep the ball down and away from the middle of the plate."

Casey Kotchman clubbed a two-run home run for the Indians, who lost 24 games in a month for the first time since July 1914. Ubaldo Jimenez (9-14) gave up four runs on eight hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

"I was fighting too many batters out there tonight," said Jimenez. "Too many times out there I wasn't getting a strike on the first pitch."

Hoping to add to Cleveland's misery on Saturday will be righty Scott Feldman, who has lost his last four starts. Feldman's latest setback came on Sunday against Minnesota, as he allowed six runs (5 earned) and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings, dropping him to 6-10 on the year to go along with a 4.95 ERA.

"It was a frustrating game in that they had guys on base the whole day, whether it was by well-executed bunts or hits in the right spot," said Feldman. "They also got some hits with runners in scoring position. I thought I made good pitches, for the most part, but ... ultimately, we didn't win the game. That's the frustrating part."

Feldman has faced the Indians 10 times (3 starts) and is 2-1 with a 3.48 ERA.

The Rangers won nine of 10 versus the Indians last season, including all four at Cleveland, but the Tribe won two of three when the teams met in Cleveland from May 4-6.
