Detwiler goes for win No. 10 in matchup with Marlins
Sep 8, 2012 - 12:57 PM (Sports Network) - Ross Detwiler tries to win his third consecutive start and become a 10-game winner for the first time in the majors when the Washington Nationals resume a three-game series with the Miami Marlins.Detwiler blanked the Chicago Cubs over seven innings on Monday and before that tossed 5 2/3 frames in Miami in an 8-4 win on Aug. 29.
Mark Buehrle, who is on the cusp of a milestone, counters for the Marlins. The lefty is two strikeouts shy of becoming the 24th active pitcher with at least 1,500 strikeouts.
Buehrle threw seven innings in a 5-1 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday. He is 2-0 with a 4.85 ERA in four career starts against the Nationals franchise. That includes a 1-0 mark this season. Prior to this year, Buehrle hadn't pitched against the Nats since 2004 when they were the Montreal Expos.
The Marlins took the opener of this series, 9-7, last night. Jose Reyes' two- run triple in the 10th inning was the difference. Reyes finished with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored for the Marlins, who won their second straight game.
"It's never easy against the Nationals," Reyes said. "They always find a way to fight back. We're just happy with the win."
Chad Gaudin (3-1) earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning, while Steve Cishek left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th for his 13th save of the year.
Tyler Clippard (2-4) surrendered three runs in the top of the 10th to take the loss for Washington, which had its five-game win streak snapped but still sits 6 1/2 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
Stephen Strasburg started the game for the Nationals and allowed five runs on six hits and three walks over three innings. The hard-throwing righty is scheduled to make one more start this season before being shut down for the year.
"Sometimes there's games where it's just not going to be working in your favor," Strasburg said. "I thought we showed a lot of resilience fighting back. That's what good teams do."
Jacob Turner was sharp in a six-inning start for the Marlins, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk before the Miami bullpen allowed Washington to battle back from a 6-2 deficit.
Michael Morse singled in a run for the Nationals in the bottom of the 10th, and then they loaded the bases. Pinch-hitter Roger Bernadina and Jayson Werth both struck out.
Washington's Ryan Zimmerman extended his hit streak to 12 games.
The season series between the teams is tied, 8-8.
