Pitching highlights Padres-Red Sox
Jun 23, 2007 - 2:08 PM Boston (47-25) at San Diego (41-31) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) - The Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres continue their three-game series Saturday.
In what is expected to be a series that features plenty of pitching, the Red Sox emerged with a 2-1 victory Friday. After all, the Padres rank first in the majors in team ERA, while the Red Sox are third.
Appealing a five-game suspension, Chris Young (6-3, 2.26 ERA) takes the mound for the Padres. The righthander was ejected in the fourth inning of last Saturday's start against the Chicago Cubs when he and Derrek Lee engaged in on-field fisticuffs following a pitch that hit Lee a little too close to the head.
The Red Sox will counter with veteran Tim Wakefield (7-7, 4.18). The veteran knuckleballer has been up and down this season, beginning with a tiorrid stretch that yielded a league-best 1.79 ERA through May10 before collapsing over his next five starts.
He rebounded from that rough patch with an eight-inning, one-run effort in a win over Colorado on June 12 and earned a second straight win last Sunday despite allowing five runs in 5 2/3 innings against San Francisco.
