Padres' Young shuts down Red Sox

Jun 24, 2007 - 6:19 AM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Chris Young turned in another dominating performance at Petco Park.

Young cruised through seven innings and Khalil Greene homered twice to help the San Diego Padres even the three-game series against the Boston Red Sox with a 6-1 victory on Saturday.

The 6-foot-10 Young struck out a season-high 11 batters and allowed just one hit in shutting down the Red Sox. In his seven home starts, Young has given up just five earned runs over 48 innings, good for a 0.94 ERA.

"The story tonight is the offense and the guys coming out swinging the bats like that and getting some runs," Young said. "Just the way we swung the bat tonight made it a lot of fun. It gave me room for error against a team that is a great hitting team where there isn't a lot of room for error."

"We saw him in his major league debut and he dominated us that game with basically one pitch," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "Now he's got a couple of years under his belt, and he's throwing off-speed for strikes and elevating that fastball. Hitters don't get a good look at it."

Heath Bell pitched a scoreless eighth and Justin Hampson allowed a run-scoring double to Mike Lowell before retiring the side in the ninth.

San Diego took the lead in the second when Mike Cameron led off with a single against Boston starter Tim Wakefield and stole second. Josh Bard doubled to plate Cameron for a 1-0 advantage.

"I don't think (Wakefield) was leaving balls up," Bard said. "I think we were fortunate to get some bounces. He's a great pitcher, obviously, with his body of work. We were fortunate today to get some runs off him."

Greene led off the fifth with a solo shot before the first of two controversial calls led to another run.

Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a line drive to left field that third base umpire Brian Knight initially ruled a catch by Manny Ramirez. Padres manager Bud Black argued the call and, after conferring with the rest of the crew, home plate umpire Doug Eddings ruled it a hit.

Kouzmanoff came on to score on a double by Marcus Giles.

With Cameron on second base, Bard hit a drive to left that caromed off the corner of the Western Metal Supply Co. building, which demarcates the foul line. Knight ruled the ball had landed foul, and another argument by Black and conference among the umpires led to a reversal of the call.

"I think it goes to show, and I've seen this the last couple of years, that (the umpires) are convening and talking through it, and coming up with a decision," Black said. "So, I tip my cap to the umpires for, a lot of times, taking the ego out of the call and talking it through."

Francona disputed the call and was ejected by third base umpire Brian Knight.

"I have a feeling they probably ended up getting both right," Francona said. "You get frustrated. When umpires confer like that, you appreciate it, because sometimes they're going to be in your favor.

"Getting the call right is important, but sometimes you just have to yell at somebody."

Wakefield (7-8) allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings. He gave up eight hits and recorded four strikeouts without walking a batter.

"Very deflating," Wakefield said of the reversed calls. "I'm not saying that was the reason for the loss. I should've pitched better than I did."

J.D. Drew, who returned to the lineup after missing Friday's game due to a right quadriceps injury, singled in the fifth for Boston's only hit against Young.

The Red Sox had their three game-winning streak snapped by San Diego, which won at home for the second time in eight games.
