Glavine chases win No. 298 at Coors Field
Jul 2, 2007 - 1:42 PM NY Mets (46-34) at Colorado (39-43) 9:05 pm EDTDENVER (Ticker) -- Tom Glavine looks to record his 298th career win when the New York Mets begin a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Monday.
Glavine (7-5, 4.12 ERA), who has not faced the Rockies in two years, has experienced a great deal of success against them over his career, going 11-5 with a 2.88 ERA in 27 starts. This includes a 3-2 mark with a 3.56 ERA at hitter-friendly Coors Field.
The 41-year-old lefthander tossed all six frames of a rain-shortened 2-0 win over the Cardinals on Wednesday, permitting just one hit. It was his second consecutive win after going 0-4 in his previous five.
The Rockies will answer with Jason Hirsh (3-7, 5.21), who has not won since tossing a five-hitter on June 10. On Wednesday, he surrendered five runs and five hits over six innings as Colorado lost, 6-4, to the Chicago Cubs.
The righthander lost his only start against New York as a member of the Astros despite allowing just one earned run over six frames last season.
Hirsh would like to give Colorado enough room for error, especially considering the disarray in which the bullpen is in. Brian Fuentes, who was demoted from the closer's role on Saturday, was just named to the All-Star team despite blowing four consecutive saves.
Fuentes surrendered two more runs in one inning in the Rockies' 12-0 loss to Houston on Sunday and has yielded 10 earned runs in his last five appearances, spanning just 3 1/3 innings.
New York has won 20 of the last 26 meetings between the teams.
