Hirsh, Holliday lead Rockies past Mets
Jul 3, 2007 - 5:01 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- Jason Hirsh and Matt Holliday helped put an emphatic end to a terrible stretch for the Colorado Rockies.Hirsh pitched six scoreless innings and Holliday homered during a six-run third inning as the Rockies coasted to a 6-2 victory over the streaking New York Mets on Monday night.
Colorado, coming off a dismal 1-9 road trip that was the worst in franchise history, played its first home game since a sweep of the New York Yankees on June 21 and won for just the second time in its last 10 games.
"It didn't surprise us," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "It might have surprised other people, but these guys come to play. A big six-run inning for us, and then a nice win to start the homestand."
Hirsh (4-7) was outstanding in this one, yielding just three hits with two strikeouts before leaving in the bottom of the sixth with an ankle injury suffered during a pickoff play as he was leading off third base.
"I just wanted to keep our team close. I thought if we keep our team within striking distance I'd help them out," Hirsh said.
After a pair of singles by Willy Taveras and Jamey Carroll in the third, Holliday belted his 15th homer - a 415-foot shot to left field. Named as a National League All-Star reserve on Sunday, Holliday leads the NL in hits and total bases.
"He's (Holliday) an excellent hitter," Mets manager Willie Randolph said. "You make a mistake like that, leave the ball middle in and he's strong. He's one of the better hitters in the game made him pay for it."
"There's a little bit less pressure when you have a three-run lead," Hirsh said.
Following Holliday's shot, Mets starter Tom Glavine (7-6) got Todd Helton to line out to first before the Rockies added three more runs. Garrett Atkins singled and Troy Tulowitzki walked before Brad Hawpe hit an RBI single. After an intentional walk to Chris Iannetta, Hirsh helped his own case with a two-run double for a 6-0 cushion.
"(Hirsh) hasn't been a real offensive player for us so far but we'll take whatever he can give us," Hurdle said.
In search for his 298th career win, Glavine was tagged for six runs and nine hits with five walks and three strikeouts, snapping his personal two-game winning streak.
"I felt great," Glavine said. "There wasn't a whole lot I would have done differently it was just bad results. Sometimes you make good pitches and get bad results and after that home run, it was just bad results."
Ruben Gotay scored on a wild pitch and Carlos Beltran had an RBI groundout in the eighth for the Mets, who entered winning eight of its previous 10 games and fell to 19-10 in the first game of a series.
