Maddux takes mound as Padres face Marlins

Jul 3, 2007 - 2:33 PM Florida (38-45) at San Diego (47-34) 10:05 pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux and the San Diego Padres aim for their sixth win in their last seven games when they host the Florida Marlins on Tuesday.

Maddux (7-4, 3.66 ERA) is 4-1 with a 3.07 ERA in his last seven starts after limiting San Francisco to one run and five hits in seven innings on Friday.

A future Hall of Famer, Maddux needs 10 wins to become the ninth pitcher in baseball history to record 350 career victories. Roger Clemens joined the exclusive fraternity Monday by leading the New York Yankees past the Minnesota Twins.

Although Maddux will be hard-pressed to join Clemens in the 350-win club this season, he will have a good chance to chip away against the Marlins. The 41-year-old righthander owns a career record of 19-12 with a 2.73 ERA in 39 career starts against Florida.

Maddux has faced the Marlins only once this season, yielding three runs in six innings despite not factoring in the decision of a 5-4 road loss on May 4.

A pair of other veteran pitchers paced the Padres to a 3-1 triumph in Monday's series opener. David Wells, 44, logged 6 2/3 scoreless frames to record the win while Trevor Hoffman, 39, notched his 24th save.

Hoffman, who began his career with the Marlins and was traded to the Padres in June 1993, has 506 career saves - the most in baseball history.

Florida, which has lost seven of its last nine contests, sends Scott Olsen (6-6, 4.93) to the mound. The lefthander has not fared well on the road, posting an 0-3 record with a 5.46 ERA in his last five starts away from Dolphin Stadium.
