Cards, Giants cap series at AT&T Park

Apr 7, 2013 - 2:15 PM (Sports Network) - Matt Cain hopes to follow up on a solid season-opening performance when he takes the mound Sunday for the San Francisco Giants in the rubber match of a three-game set versus St. Louis.

Cain faces the Cardinals for the first time since Game 7 of the NLCS. In that contest, Cain pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings in San Francisco's 9-0 victory. During regular season play, Cain is 2-3 with a 4.94 ERA in eight games against the Cardinals.

On Monday, Cain fanned eight and scattered four hits over six scoreless frames in San Francisco's 4-0 road loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Adam Wainwright, who won Game 4 of the 2012 NLCS, counters for the Cardinals. Wainwright, who signed a new five-year contract worth close to $100 million in the offseason, gave up 11 hits and four runs -- three earned -- in six innings of a season-opening loss to the Diamondbacks Monday.

Wainwright has a 2-4 mark with a 3.04 ERA in eight games (6 starts) in the regular season against the Giants. He's 1-4 with a 4.11 ERA in his career at AT&T Park.

In Saturday's contest, Pete Kozma went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Carlos Beltran had two hits and three RBI to lead St. Louis to a 6-3 win.

Matt Carpenter had two hits, plated one run and scored two runs and Matt Holliday had one hit and RBI for St. Louis, which evened the best of three series.

"It's a good team. We have a good lineup," Beltran said. "We have guys from top to bottom that can do the job."

Shelby Miller (1-0), who made just his second career start, tossed 5 1/3 solid innings, giving up two runs and four walks on four hits while striking out four in the victory.

Hunter Pence and Pablo Sandoval each hit solo home runs for the Giants, who saw starter Ryan Vogelsong (0-1) allow five runs on nine hits and strike out six over 5 1/3 innings.

Mitchell Boggs secured the win in the ninth with his first save of the season.

"We're not quite clicking offensively, but we stayed in the game and had a good couple chances there," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "You always go with the history and track record of these guys. They're getting into the flow of things."

The Cardinals split their six matchups with the Giants last season. However, St. Louis hasn't won a season series against them since it took four of five during the 2006 season.
