Angels begin home slate versus A's
Apr 9, 2013 - 3:09 PM (Sports Network) - A pair of American League West rivals collide for the first time this season on Tuesday when the Oakland Athletics open a three-game road series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the home opener at Angel Stadium. The Athletics won the division a season ago and are currently tied with Texas for AL West supremacy. They have won five in a row since losing the first two games of the season and swept a three-game series in Houston over the weekend.
Oakland completed the sweep with Sunday's 9-3 drubbing of the Astros thanks to a three-run homer by Chris Young and a two-run shot from Jed Lowrie. Coco Crisp hit a solo homer for Oakland.
"We've done everything well," Lowrie told the club's website. "We've pitched well, played good defense and hit well."
Brett Anderson gave up two unearned runs on five hits with a pair of walks and 10 strikeouts over six innings for the win.
In injury news for the A's, right fielder Josh Reddick left the game in the fifth inning with an apparent right arm injury after crashing into the wall while trying to run down a foul ball. He is day-to-day.
The Athletics will send Jarrod Parker to the mound Tuesday for his second start of the season, hoping he can bounce back from a rough debut.
Parker toed the rubber in a 7-1 loss to Seattle last Tuesday and was reached for four runs and five hits in five innings. Parker went 13-8 in 29 starts a season ago and is 1-2 with a 2.60 ERA in four career starts against Anaheim. The right-hander was solid on the road in 2012, going 7-3 in 14 starts.
Angels fans will get a glimpse of their team when it plays the home opener Tuesday against the rival A's.
The Angels went 2-4 against Cincinnati and Texas to start the campaign and will play six in a row in front of the friendly faithful. Anaheim lost two of three meetings with the Rangers over the weekend and dropped a 7-3 decision Sunday in Arlington.
Josh Hamilton had three hits and a run scored, Mark Trumbo added two hits and two RBI and Alberto Callaspo went 2-for-4 in defeat. Mike Trout was hitless in four at-bats and scored a run. Jered Weaver was dealt the loss for giving up five runs and seven hits in five innings. Weaver took a shot off his left arm in the sixth inning and had to be replaced.
"It's pretty painful. It feels a little swollen in there," Weaver said. "I can't move it around too good right now. It's strange. Kind of like jamming your thumb."
C.J. Wilson hopes to have better results than Weaver on Tuesday and was banged around his last time out in a no-decision. Wilson was tagged for four runs -- three earned -- and five hits in six innings of a 5-4 loss at Cincinnati last Wednesday.
Wilson is coming off a 13-10 season over 34 starts in 2012 and will make his home debut tonight. The lefty was only 5-6 in 15 home starts last year and is 7-7 with a 3.57 earned run average in 41 career meetings, 12 of which have been starts, with Oakland. He has pitched 106.0 innings against the A's and went 2-2 in four starts in this series in 2012.
The Angels were 9-10 against Oakland a season ago and lost seven of the 10 matchups at home.
