Haren heads to the hill to face Marlins
Apr 16, 2013 - 3:08 PM (Sports Network) - Righty Dan Haren makes start No. 3 with his new team on Tuesday night when the Washington Nationals visit Marlins Park for the middle test of a three-game series with the Miami Marlins.A 119-game winner through 296 big-league starts by the end of 2012, Haren signed a one-year deal with the Nationals in the offseason worth $13 million.
He dropped a 15-0 decision at Cincinnati in his initial outing with the Nationals on April 5, then returned for a 7-4 win six days later with five innings of three-run ball in which he allowed 10 hits.
Batters are hitting .413 against him through nine full innings, 159 points above his career mark of .254.
Haren is 1-3 in five starts against the Marlins, though he's never pitched in the stadium that opened at the beginning of 2012.
Miami counters with 24-year-old righty Alex Sanabia, who appears in his 21st big-league game and makes his 17th start.
He was 5-3 heading into this season and has since split a pair of starts, allowing six hits in six scoreless innings of a 7-5 win over the New York Mets, then getting touched for six runs in five innings in an 8-0 loss to Atlanta.
Sanabia is 2-1 in three career meetings with the Nationals while toting a stingy 2.04 ERA through 17 2/3 innings.
He's 2-4 in eight lifetime home starts, compared to a pristine 4-0 mark in 12 appearances away from Miami.
On Monday, Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer and had four RBI as the Nationals defeated the Marlins, 10-3.
Tyler Moore drove in three runs, while Ian Desmond went 4-for-5 and scored twice for the Nationals, who saw starter Jordan Zimmermann (3-0) pitch a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk.
"We gained some early runs and it's a lot easier to pitch when you got runs early in the game," said Zimmermann. "And I was just pounding it, pounding the strike zone with the fastball."
Juan Pierre, Chris Coghlan and Rob Brantly drove in a run apiece for the Marlins, who were without slugger Giancarlo Stanton for the fourth straight game. Starter Wade LeBlanc (0-3) lasted just 3 2/3 innings, surrendering seven runs on nine hits and two walks.
"It looked like to me he just missed up in the zone early in the game," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "Against an offense and a team like this, you got to keep the ball down and you got to move and change speeds and tonight just wasn't his night."
The Nationals swept Miami in a season-opening series at Nationals Park while outscoring the Marlins, 11-1. The teams split 18 games in 2012.
