Kendrick, Bailey square off at Great American Ball Park

Apr 16, 2013 - 3:08 PM (Sports Network) - Texas-born righty Kyle Kendrick starts for the third time this season on Tuesday when the Philadelphia Phillies visit the Cincinnati Reds in the second of three games at Great American Ball Park.

Kendrick won 11 games in 37 appearances - 25 starts - for the Phillies last season, marking the third time since his debut year of 2007 that he'd won 11 times.

He subsequently opened 2013 with a 13-4 interleague loss to Kansas City on April 5, then downed the New York Mets, 7-3, on April 10 with six innings of eight-hit, two-run ball.

In seven career meetings against the Reds, Kendrick is 3-2 with a 5.00 earned run average in 36 innings while allowing 36 hits and striking out 17 batters with a .269 opposition batting average.

He's won one of three lifetime outings at Great American Ball Park.

Starting for the Reds will be righty Homer Bailey, who entered the season with 13 consecutive scoreless innings across his final two regular-season starts in 2012.

Bailey continued the string with six innings of two-hit ball in a 15-0 defeat of the Washington Nationals in his 2013 debut on April 5 - but was on the other end of a 10-0 shutout in St. Louis five days later after giving up seven runs and nine hits in five innings.

Bailey is winless in six career starts with the Phillies with an unsightly 5.29 ERA across 32 1/3 innings.

He's 19-19 in 61 career starts at home.

On Monday, Brandon Phillips broke a tie with a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Reds ended a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 win.

A pinch-hitting Derrick Robinson singled off Philadelphia reliever Jeremy Horst (0-1) to begin the frame. Starter Cliff Lee had tossed six scoreless innings before giving up two runs in the seventh.

After Shin-Soo Choo bunted Robinson to second base and Zack Cozart doubled, Horst intentionally walked Joey Votto to load the bases, prompting a pitching change.

Mike Adams came on to face Phillips, who put Cincinnati in front with a base hit to right field.

"I understand what (Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel) was trying to do, but I had a chip on my shoulder right there and I'm glad I came through," Phillips said.

Aroldis Chapman closed the door in the ninth, earning his third save of the season.

The Phillies had erased a 2-0 deficit on Chase Utley's two-run, pinch-hit homer in the top of the eighth. The two-out blast was one of five hits given up by Cincinnati starter Bronson Arroyo (2-1).

"It's too bad. We tied the game, but we couldn't hold them," Manuel said.

The Phillies won four of seven games between the teams in 2012 and have won the season series each year since 2004, when it was tied at three games apiece. The Reds last won in 2003 by taking five of nine games.
