Marquis shuts down Dodgers
Apr 17, 2013 - 5:41 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Jason Marquis pitched into the eighth inning and the San Diego Padres erupted for 15 hits in a 9-2 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers.Marquis (1-1) retired 12 straight at one point and limited the Dodgers to one run on three hits and one walk over 7 1/3 innings.
Alexi Amarista went 3-for-5 with four RBI, Yonder Alonso had three hits, scored twice and knocked in two and Nick Hundley also plated a pair for the Padres, who have taken the first two meetings of this three-game set.
Chris Capuano (0-1), taking the rotation spot of the injured Zack Greinke, was shelled for five runs on five hits and two walks before leaving with a left calf strain in the third inning.
Mark Ellis drove in LA's first run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the third inning, but by that time the Padres had already built a 5-0 lead.
They scored four times in the first inning off Capuano, who yielded five singles and forced in a run when he walked Hundley with the bags full. Alonso and Amarista both knocked in runs with singles through the right side of the infield, with Amarista's base hit scoring a pair.
Hundley added a sac fly in the third, then scored on Amarista's single to center in the fifth.
Alonso and Jedd Gyorko helped the Padres keep their foot on the gas with run- scoring hits in the sixth, and the Dodgers' last run came in the ninth when Andrew Cashner walked pinch-hitter Nick Punto with the bases loaded.
Game Notes
Marquis became the first Padres starter to throw at least seven innings this season ... Marquis entered the game with the lowest ERA (2.60) by an active visiting pitcher at Dodger Stadium ... Clayton Kershaw will try to help the Dodgers avoid a sweep Wednesday when he toes the rubber opposite Tyson Ross.
