Nicasio goes for Rockies in the desert

(Sports Network) - Early-season standout Juan Nicasio can even a four-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night when his Colorado Rockies visit them for the second test of a four-game set at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks broke out on top of the series on Thursday, when Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run home run in a 3-2 triumph.

Wil Nieves drove in the other run for the Diamondbacks, who saw starter Trevor Cahill (1-3) allow an unearned run on four hits and four walks over five innings, despite needing 105 pitches to finish his outing.

J.J. Putz pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his fourth save.

"We were able to scrape across a couple of runs," Goldschmidt said. "The pitching has been doing so well lately. They've been keeping us in a lot of games."

Troy Tulowitzki had an RBI and Michael Cuddyer scored on a fielding error by Martin Prado for the Rockies. Starter Jorge De La Rosa (2-2) surrendered three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and three walks in six innings.

"I think (Cahill) was really using his pitches efficiently," Colorado outfielder Eric Young Jr. said. "He was able to get the sinker."

Nicasio, who's won eight times in 28 career starts, defeated Milwaukee and the New York Mets for his first two decisions of the season while allowing 13 hits and six runs in 11 innings.

He got a no-decision against San Francisco in between those starts, then got a no-decision against Arizona in his most recent start, a 5-4 Diamondbacks win, on April 21.

Nicasio allowed two runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings in that game, which was his third career meeting with Arizona.

He has never pitched at Chase Field.

The Diamondbacks will oppose Nicasio with righty Brandon McCarthy, who faced him while also getting a no-decision in the April 21 game.

The 29-year-old allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings in that outing - his first career meeting with Colorado.

In three prior starts this month, McCarthy was 0-2 with a 7.47 earned run average against St. Louis, Pittsburgh and the New York Yankees.

The Rockies won two of three games between the teams earlier this month in Colorado, while Arizona won the 2012 series, 10-8.
