Cubs hope for another home defeat of Padres

Apr 30, 2013 - 2:43 PM (Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs will resume a four- game series Tuesday at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs took the opener by a 5-3 score as Scott Hairston and Cody Ransom hit back-to- back home runs in the second inning and Darwin Barney drove in two runs for the Cubs, who have won six of their last seven games against the Padres at home.

Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija allowed three runs on four hits and four walks in five innings in a no-decision. Michael Bowden pitched a perfect sixth to get the win while Kevin Gregg set down the final four batters to notch his fourth save.

"Too many walks, you know you can't that put many guys on for free ... makes it harder on yourself," said Samardzija. "It was nice to have that lead, allowed me to go out there an attack the zone a little bit."

Yonder Alonso had two RBI for the Padres, who saw starter Clayton Richard surrender five runs on seven hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings.

"We just couldn't seem to cash in when we had a couple guys on," said Padres manager Bud Black. "We got the runners in scoring position a couple times, just couldn't get the big knock."

The Padres had won four in a row.

Toeing the rubber for the Cubs Tuesday will be Edwin Jackson. Jackson is winless (0-3) on the season in five starts to go along with a 4.76 ERA. In eight career appearances (6 starts) against the Padres, Jackson is 0-3 with a 4.32 earned run average.

San Diego will hand the ball to Edinson Volquez on Tuesday and he is 1-3 with a 6.39 ERA in five starts. He did earn his first win of the season the last time out on Wednesday in a 2-1 victory over Milwaukee and tossed seven shutout innings.

Volquez has an unblemished record against the Cubs, going 4-0 with a 2.21 ERA in six career starts from his days with Cincinnati.

Chicago and San Diego split six matchups a season ago and both teams posted three-game sweeps as the host. The Cubs and Padres also split six meetings in 2011.
