Kennedy tries to find win column against Padres

The right-hander has gone 0-2 in his five starts since beating the St. Louis Cardinals on April 1 and did not get a decision on Monday versus the San Francisco Giants in his second straight meeting with the club.
After holding the Giants to a run in six innings five days earlier, Kennedy yielded four runs on seven hits and three walks over seven frames of his club's 6-4 defeat, falling to 1-2 with a 4.78 earned run average on the season.
The 28-year-old has great career numbers versus the Padres, going 7-1 with a 2.79 ERA in 11 meetings. That includes a 3-0 mark and 1.13 ERA in four outings at Petco Park.
Getting the call today for the Padres is righty Edinson Volquez, who has won back-to-back outings despite giving up four runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 frames at the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.
Volquez, staked to an 8-0 lead, yielded a pair of two-run homers and all three of his walks were issued in the sixth inning, ending a streak of consecutive innings pitched without a walk at 13.
Still, the offensive backing in the 13-7 win allowed the 29-year-old to improve to 2-3 with a 6.39 ERA on the season and he is 1-2 lifetime versus the Diamondbacks with a 4.15 ERA in seven meetings.
The Padres were able to deal the Diamondbacks a fourth straight setback by taking Friday's opener, but Arizona rebounded with an 8-1 rout in the second meeting.
A.J. Pollock drove in a pair of runs during a six-run second inning and added a solo homer later in the game for Arizona, which also got two RBI from Paul Goldschmidt.
Patrick Corbin knocked in a run and improved to 4-0 on the season by holding the Padres to five hits over seven frames. His lone mistake was a solo homer yielded to Chris Denorfia in the seventh inning.
"It really helps when we come out and put up six runs early on in the game. It just lets you go out there, pitch you game and go after guys. It helped out a lot and I am glad I was able to get through seven innings," Corbin said.
Clayton Richard remained winless on the season for San Diego and was tagged for seven runs -- five earned -- on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings. Richard hasn't earned a win since Sept. 20, 2012.
"The inability to consistently throw a strike when he needs to, and to make that one pitch to get him out of a jam just isn't happening," said Padres manager Bud Black.
San Diego had won seven of nine coming into the game and lost for just the fourth time in its past 14 versus Arizona.
