Orioles carry momentum into test with Twins
May 11, 2013 - 2:49 PM (Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles will try to ride the momentum of another extra-inning victory when they take on the Minnesota Twins Saturday. The Orioles were at it again on Friday, as they rallied from a 6-0 deficit to take home a 9-6 win in 10 innings against the Twins.
Chris Davis got the rally started with an RBI double to begin a three-run sixth inning and then with an RBI double an inning later tied the game at 6-6. Neither team was able to push any runs across until the 10th, when the Orioles got a pair of RBI singles from Manny Machado and Adam Jones and a sacrifice fly from Nick Markakis.
Davis went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI in the game and Machado and Jones each had three hits as well for Baltimore, which has won six of its last seven games en route to forcing a tie with Boston and New York for first place in the American League East.
The Orioles bullpen really picked up the team after starter Jason Hammel gave up six runs in four innings of work. Tommy Hunter got the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings while Jim Johnson nailed down his 14th save of the campaign with a scoreless 10th.
Minnesota's loss came after taking 3-of-4 from the Red Sox over the week. Joe Mauer went 3-for-5 in the contest with a pair of RBI but Josh Roenicke and Anthony Swarzak each gave up three runs in relief, with Swarzak giving up the game-winning runs in the 10th to allow the Orioles to steal the win.
Taking the mound for the Twins in Saturday's matchup is Vance Worley. Since his impressive rookie year with the Phillies in 2011, when he went 11-3 with an ERA of 3.01, Worley has been on the downturn. This season has been especially bad for the right-hander as he is winless in all seven starts (0-4) with an ERA of 6.95.
Worley has made it past the fifth inning just twice on the campaign and he has allowed at least three runs in all but two outings. Last time out, Worley allowed three runs over five innings of work against the Red Sox.
Earlier this season, Worley made his second-career start against the Orioles. He allowed five runs, four earned, on a season-high tying 10 hits over five innings. He did not take the loss though as the Twins were able to capture a 6-5 victory, marking just the second time the Twins have won when Worley gets the start.
Though Worley has only been pitching at the Major League level for the last four seasons he has much more experience than who will oppose him for Baltimore as 25-year-old rookie Steve Johnson gets the start.
