Minor attempts to pitch Braves to sweep of Dodgers
May 19, 2013 - 1:27 PM (Sports Network) - Mike Minor has been spectacular on the mound in his last two starts and Sunday the Atlanta left-hander has a chance to complete a three-game sweep for the Braves against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In two wins at Arizona and Cincinnati, Minor has allowed a combined two runs over 13 2/3 innings. He's on a three-game unbeaten streak.
This will be Minor's fourth career start against the Dodgers, a team he's 0-1 against with a 2.37 ERA.
Matt Magill, a 23-year-old righty, counters for the Dodgers. Magill will make his fourth major league start, but could need a solid outing in order to stay in the L.A. rotation. That's because Ted Lilly is due to be activated off the disabled list in the coming week.
Magill had a solid debut April 27 against the Brewers by allowing a pair of runs over 6 2/3 innings, but then was blasted to the tune of six hits and five runs in 1 1/3 innings versus the Giants. On May 10, he pitched five inning in another no-decision against Miami.
On Saturday, at Turner Field, Evan Gattis spoiled a terrific start from Chris Capuano with a two-run homer in the eighth inning that lifted the Braves to a 3-1 comeback win.
"I don't know," Gattis said. "It just happened that way. I'm just glad it went my way. I fouled off some awesome pitches and got one that I could handle and thank God it went out."
After Capuano went 7 1/3 innings without allowing a run, he was lifted in favor of Kenley Jansen (1-2) with one away and a runner on first in the eighth after Gattis was announced as a pinch-hitter. Gattis fouled off three straight pitches after working the count to 2-2 before unleashing his blast into the left-field seats for his second pinch-hit homer of the year and a 2-1 Atlanta lead.
"What could I do?," added Jansen. "I'm not going to let that bother me. Tip your hat. He hit a good pitch. You've got to go in there. Period. He's creeping up on home plate every time I'm throwing outside. I put it where I wanted to put it."
Andrelton Simmons homered on the very next pitch to provide an insurance run for Craig Kimbrel, who closed it out in the ninth for his 13th save of the season.
Chris Johnson had three of Atlanta's five hits off Capuano, whose final line included a run allowed and five strikeouts.
Kris Medlen went seven strong for the Braves, allowing one unearned run on two hits while fanning five. Cory Gearrin (1-0) needed just nine pitches to get through the eighth.
Braves setup man Eric O'Flaherty was put on the DL with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He may need undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.
The Dodgers and Braves split six meetings last year, with Los Angeles winning two of three in Atlanta.
