Braves overtake Dodgers with late surge
May 20, 2013 - 12:05 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves had a four-run rally in the eighth inning and swept a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-2 win on Sunday. With the bases loaded and the Braves trailing 2-1 in the eighth, Gerald Laird singled to score Freddie Freeman. Ramiro Pena then hit a sacrifice fly, plating B.J. Upton. Chris Johnson's single scored Andrelton Simmons and Jordan Schafer's sac fly brought Laird home.
Schafer had two RBI for the Braves, who saw starter Mike Minor allow two runs on three hits in six innings. Luis Avilan (2-0) pitched a flawless eighth to earn the win and Craig Kimbrel earned his 14th save with a scoreless ninth.
"We fought back there," said Schafer. "We put some good at-bats together and we were able to squeak one out there."
Adrian Gonzalez drove in two runs for the Dodgers, who mustered just three hits. Starter Matt Magill allowed just one unearned run on four hits and three walks over five frames.
"I think every time I go out there, I feel more comfortable," said Magill. "Just working on my pitches. Just try to go out there every time, do my job, and help my team ... that's all i can do."
Los Angeles' Carl Crawford ripped a double to left to start the game and scored on a two-out single by Gonzalez. Two innings later, he drew a walk to begin the third, advanced to third on a double by Matt Kemp and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez.
The Braves got on the board in the fifth, when Schafer singled with two outs to plate Ramiro Pena.
In the sixth, Magill allowed a leadoff single to Justin Upton and was replaced by J.P. Howell. However, before the reliever could start pitching, the game was delayed due to rain.
Kenley Jansen (1-3) came on in the eighth for the Dodgers and gave up a single to Freeman and walked Brian McCann, who was then replaced on the bases by B.J. Upton. After Brandon League relieved Jansen, Simmons bunted but was able to reach first, thanks to a poor throw by Juan Uribe that loaded the bases and extended the rally.
Game Notes
Mark Ellis, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game, was 0-for-4 with a strikeout for Los Angeles ... Kemp entered the game in an 0-for-22 slump at Turner Field ... The Braves were 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
