Phillies bring swagger to Miami

May 20, 2013 - 2:44 PM (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies had a flair for the dramatics in their recent series win and look to carry that momentum into an upcoming eight-game road trip, starting with Monday's opener of a three-game set against the Miami Marlins.

The Phillies won two of three from the visiting Cincinnati Reds over the weekend and took the series in walk-off fashion on Sunday, as Erik Kratz tied the game with a home run off Reds hard-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman and Freddy Galvis followed with a line-drive shot over the wall in left field to win it.

"I saw a heater and felt I hit it good," said Galvis. "First time in my life. I'll never forget it."

It didn't look promising for the Phillies when starting pitcher Cliff Lee was used as a pinch-runner and got picked off in a run-down at first base. Lee was visibly upset with himself and a camera was on him after the Kratz homer that could have ended the game had the lefty not been picked off.

Lee, though, was redeemed of his base-running blunder when Galvis smacked a shot to left and gave the Phillies their fifth win in seven tries.

"I've never been so disappointed when a guy hit a home run to tie the game in my life," Lee said. "That was bad. I felt horrible."

All is well for the Phillies, who finally got on the board in the eighth inning thanks to Chase Utley's RBI single.

Phils left-hander Antonio Bastardo picked up the win by pitching a scoreless inning in relief of rookie starter Jonathan Pettibone, who allowed two runs -- one earned -- in seven innings.

"Today's game was definitely a pick me up," said Phils manager Charlie Manuel. "It'll give us a nice little ride down to Florida. Much better than if we'd lost."

The Phillies are set to have two of their sluggers undergo MRIs with Ryan Howard nursing a knee ailment and Carlos Ruiz hampered by a hamstring problem. Howard has a sore left knee and was held out of the Phillies' lineup Sunday and did not travel with the team to Miami. Ruiz did not make the trip down to south Florida as well and injured his leg running the bases in Sunday's win.

Minor league catcher Humberto Quintero was sent to Miami just in case Ruiz lands on the disabled list, but Kratz will most likely get the start.

Philadelphia has lost three straight and eight of the nine starts Cole Hamels has made this season. Hamels hopes to get some run support Monday and is 1-6 with a 4.61 earned run average in nine outings. He was banged around for five runs and six hits in five innings of a 10-4 loss to Cleveland last Wednesday.

Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP, has given up five or more runs three times this season and is 0-1 in two starts against Miami this season -- both Philadelphia losses. In 26 career starts against the Marlins, the left-hander is just 8-11 with a 3.24 ERA.

Miami will continue its nine-game homestand (1-5) tonight and halted a seven- game slide with Sunday's 2-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a three-game set from Marlins Park.

Marcell Ozuna's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning was good enough for the Marlins, who saw starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco deliver eight innings of one-run ball and strike out 11 batters. Steve Cishek got the first two outs of the ninth and Mike Dunn did the rest for his first save.

"I wanted to finish it, but at the same time, we've got Cishek down there," Nolasco said. "Fourth time around the lineup, and those guys seeing me. It was a good decision to make."

Alex Sanabia draws the start for the Marlins Monday and he has lost five straight trips to the mound. He is 0-5 with a 5.46 earned run average during the slide and was last in action Wednesday in a 4-0 loss to Cincinnati. Sanabia was responsible for all four runs and nine hits in six innings, falling to 2-6 in eight starts with a 5.00 ERA.

The right-handed Sanabia has allowed at least six hits in every start and three runs or more in five outings. Sanabia lost to the Phillies on May 2 and is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two career starts in this series.

Philadelphia is 4-3 against the Marlins this season and has won 11 of the last 16 matchups between the NL East inhabitants.
