Ruggiano helps Marlins down Phillies
May 21, 2013 - 4:36 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Justin Ruggiano's sixth inning double put Miami in front and the Marlins' bullpen spun 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Alex Sanabia to down the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-1, in the opener of a three- game set from Marlins Park.Tied at 1-1 in the home half of the sixth, Placido Polanco led off with a single to center. Phillies starter Cole Hamels (1-7), who had a season-high 10 strikeouts, fanned Derek Dietrich and Marcell Ozuna, but Ruggiano delivered a two-out double, scoring Polanco without a throw.
Ruggiano drove in an insurance run as part of a three-run eighth on a single up the middle, once again plating Polanco. Two batters later, Nick Green's bloop single against Phillippe Aumont sent two more Marlins across the plate.
"We've been waiting for those hits, and tonight we were fortunate enough to get a couple," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
Sanabia (3-6) went 6 1/3 innings in his second start against the Phillies in May, giving up just one run on seven hits. Former Phillie Chad Qualls hurled a perfect ninth to secure Miami's second straight win after dropping seven in a row.
Jimmy Rollins, Michael Young and Domonic Brown all had two hits for Philadelphia, which has lost two of three. Brown also added his team-leading eighth home run of the season.
"We have the talent and ability...we just have to get going," Brown said.
A trio of singles put Miami ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Adeiny Hechavarria led off with a poke to right, stole second and advanced to third when Dietrich reached on an infield single. Ozuna's shot back up the middle spotted Sanabia an early lead.
Brown knotted things up in the second when he took a Sanabia offering over the wall in right field.
