Mariners continue road trip in Anaheim
May 21, 2013 - 2:51 PM (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners will begin the final leg of their nine-game road trip Tuesday, when they open a quick two-game series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Mariners have lost four in a row and are only 2-5 so far on the trek. In Monday afternoon's 10-8 loss in 10 innings to the Cleveland Indians, Yan Gomes hit a three-run homer off of Mariners reliever Charlie Furbush in the bottom of the 10th to complete a four-game sweep of Seattle.
Justin Smoak gave the Mariners a short-lived lead with a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning, while Kyle Seager and Endy Chavez also went deep for Seattle, which got three hits and two RBI from Kendrys Morales.
"It was another weird game," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "Cleveland is probably the hottest team in baseball and things are going their way. We kept coming back and coming back and taking the lead, we just weren't able to make plays and pitches when we needed to late."
Aaron Harang draws the start for Seattle Tuesday and he is only 1-4 with a 7.30 earned run average in five starts. Harang last toed the rubber May 7 in a 4-1 loss at Pittsburgh and allowed two runs in six innings to take the loss.
Harang missed his last outing in New York due to lower back stiffness.
"He's still lined up for Tuesday," Wedge said. "We anticipate everything being fine and he'll be good to go."
Harang, a right-hander, lost to the Angels in late April and is 0-2 with a 6.11 ERA in four career starts against them.
The Angels, meanwhile, are coming off a four-game split with the Chicago White Sox and recorded a 6-2 win in Sunday's series finale.
Jason Vargas threw seven scoreless innings and Ernesto Frieri tossed the final 1 1/3 innings for his ninth save.
"I was able to get ahead with the fastball early and stay ahead," said Vargas. "My changeup command is huge and I was able to catch them off guard. They hit the ball hard, but right at people today."
Erick Aybar knocked in three runs and Howie Kendrick added two RBI for the Halos, who are 3-4 on a nine-game homestand.
Jerome Williams will take the mound for the Angels Tuesday and he is 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA in 11 games (3 starts). He did not record a decision in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the White Sox, as held the visitors to two runs in six innings.
Williams, a right-hander, won his previous start at Chicago on May 11 by tossing 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball in a 3-2 victory. He tossed an inning of relief at Seattle on April 27 and is 3-1 in nine career games, four of which have starts, with a 3.27 ERA against the M's.
The Angels lost three of four matchups with Seattle from April 25-28 and are just 2-6 in the past eight encounters between the AL West foes.
