Dodgers send Greinke to the hill in Colorado
Jun 1, 2013 - 2:25 PM (Sports Network) - Zack Greinke tries to bounce back from a pair of rough outings on Saturday when the Los Angeles Dodgers continue a three-game series versus the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.Greinke pitched well in his first start after returning from the broken collarbone he suffered in a benches clearing brawl with the San Diego Padres back on April 11. However, in two starts since returning he's given up nine earned runs in eight innings.
The right-hander did not get a decision against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaeheim on Monday, but did not pitch well, as he surrendered six runs (four earned) and 10 hits in just four innings of his team's 8-7 win.
Greinke has faced the Rockies six times (5 starts) and is 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA.
Los Angeles drew first blood in this series on Friday, as Luis Cruz's go- ahead, RBI groundout in the Dodgers' two-run 10th lifted them to a 7-5 win,
The Dodgers held a 5-2 lead after seven, but Colorado pushed across a run in the eighth on a Wilin Rosario groundout and tied the game in the ninth when Todd Helton smacked a towering two-run homer into the second deck in right on the 11th pitch of his at-bat against Los Angeles closer Brandon League (1-2).
"It would be easy to lay down there," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "The boys kind of bounced right back up."
Ramon Hernandez singled against Rafael Betancourt (1-3) to begin the 10th before Scott Van Slyke struck out. Skip Schumaker's base hit put runners on the corners and pinch-runner Carl Crawford, who replaced Hernandez, scored when Cruz smoked a comebacker off the foot of Betancourt. Betancourt was able to retrieve the ball and throw out Cruz at first, but Juan Uribe singled to center to bring home Schumaker.
Ronald Belisario tossed a scoreless bottom half for his first save of the season.
Clayton Kershaw fanned five and surrendered three runs on eight hits and two walks over seven-plus innings for the Dodgers, who snapped a brief two-game skid.
Dexter Fowler tallied three hits and two runs scored for Colorado, which has dropped three straight and six of its last seven.
"We've played a lot of tight games this year and sometimes the reward for competing like that is getting punched in the gut. I like the way our guys fought back against a really good pitcher," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
Getting the call for the Rockies on Saturday will be righty Jhoulys Chacin, who is 3-3 with a 3.90 ERA. Chacin did not get a decision on Monday in Houston, as he yielded two runs and five hits in seven innings of a 3-2 win. He also struck out nine.
Chacin is 6-5 lifetime versus the Dodgers with a 3.15 ERA in 12 games (11 starts).
The Rockies took two of three meetings with the Dodgers from April 29-May 1 at Dodger Stadium after losing 10 of the 18 matchups a season ago.
