A's pull off walk-off win over White Sox
Jun 2, 2013 - 2:54 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Josh Reddick worked a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning to force in the winning run as the Oakland Athletics took a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox in the second of a three-game set on Saturday. In the bottom of the 10th, Chris Young doubled with one out against Hector Santiago (1-4) and Yoenis Cespedes was issued an intentional walk. Josh Donaldson then drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases, but Brandon Moss was robbed of the winning hit when his line drive was nabbed by a diving Jeff Keppinger at second base.
After taking the first pitch for a strike, Reddick looked at four straight balls from Santiago, with the last pitch high and inside to bring home Young for the win.
"I just think that everyone here knows how to work counts," said Reddick. "It's not something that we work on, it's just the way we like to play here. You get ahead in the count and that opens all kinds of possibilities."
Young went 3-for-6 in the game with an RBI while Jed Lowrie was 4-for-5 with a run scored for the Athletics, who have won eight of their past nine games. Jerry Blevins (4-0) got the final out of the 10th inning to get the win.
Alejandro De Aza hit a two-run single in the seventh inning to tie the game and Adam Dunn also drove in a run for the White Sox, who have dropped five straight.
"It's just one of those games where Hector was on a high-wire act," said Chicago manager Robin Ventura. "As far as getting guys on and being a little erratic, he had a tough game."
Neither pitcher factored into the decision as Dan Straily went six innings for Oakland and gave up a run on six hits with eight strikeouts, while Jose Quintana allowed three runs on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
Oakland took the lead in the bottom of the first as Lowrie singled to start the inning and later scored on a Cespedes double for a 1-0 advantage.
In the second, the Athletics took a 2-0 lead as Young singled home Derek Norris, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Chicago got one back in the third as De Aza doubled to begin the inning and later scored on a Dunn single to make it a 2-1 game.
Oakland, though, took a 3-1 advantage in the fifth. Cespedes singled to start the inning, but was picked off by Quintana. Donaldson then singled and moved to second on a Quintana balk before Nate Freiman tripled to center.
In the Chicago seventh, Keppinger singled with one out off Sean Doolittle and Hector Gimenez followed with a double. De Aza then singled to center and both runners came home to tie the game.
The A's blew a chance to end this game in the ninth after loading the bases with no outs. Norris hit into a 6-2-3 double play and Eric Sogard struck out to send the game to extras.
