Corbin targets seventh straight win against Cubs
Jun 2, 2013 - 1:20 PM (Sports Network) - Patrick Corbin tries to remain unbeaten when the Arizona Diamondbacks conclude their three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. The 23-year-old left-hander, who will make his 11th start of the year, has won his last six starts and hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any of his outings in 2013. A week ago, he gave up four runs -- three earned -- over six frames in a 6-5 triumph against the Padres.
Corbin is in some amazing company. He's one of seven pitchers since 1998 to have at least eight wins and a 1.80 ERA or lower through May 31, joining Ubaldo Jimenez (2010), Zack Greinke (2009), Dontrelle Willis (2005), Tom Glavine (2002), Randy Johnson (2000) and Pedro Martinez (2000).
The Diamondbacks are 10-0 in his starts, marking the most consecutive team wins by a starter in club history.
Corbin has made one relief effort against the Cubs, but this will be his first start.
Edwin Jackson is headed in the opposite direction with losses in his last two starts. He's 0-4 with a 7.81 ERA in five starts at Wrigley Field this year. The Cubs are 2-8 in Jackson?s 10 starts.
Jackson is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA in seven games (6 starts) when facing the Diamondbacks.
Last night, Paul Goldschmidt hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning that lifted the Diamondbacks to a 12-4 win.
Jason Kubel drove in four runs. Gerardo Parra had a home run and two RBI while Cliff Pennington and Martin Prado each drove in one run for the Diamondbacks.
Arizona starter Ian Kennedy (3-3) allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while fanning seven in seven innings.
Nate Schierholtz had a home run and drove in two runs while Alfonso Soriano and Welington Castillo had an RBI apiece for the Cubs, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.
Chicago starter Jeff Samardzija, coming off his first career shutout on Monday, had 11 strikeouts and gave up three runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.
The D'backs won five of nine matchups with the Cubs last season.
