Dodgers hope to have Ryu versus Colorado
Jun 2, 2013 - 1:20 PM (Sports Network) - Hyun-Jin Ryu tries to win his fourth straight decision on Sunday when the Los Angeles Dodgers close out a three-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.Ryu, though, may not be able to make the start as he is still dealing with lingering foot pain after taking a Mark Trumbo comebacker off the top of his left foot during the win on Tuesday.
"I think Donnie and Ned are going to make the decision," Ryu said through a translator. "I never want to take the mound putting my team in jeopardy, so if I'm not fully confident I can be the pitcher I am I wouldn't want to step out there unless I'm 100 percent."
Should he not be able to go the Dodgers would likely rely on Matt Magill, who hasn't pitched since May 25 with Triple-A Albuquerque.
Ryu was brilliant against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Tuesday, as he tossed a two-hit shutout to improve to 6-2, while lowering his ERA to 2.99. He also struck out seven in his second straight win without walking a batter.
"He gave us just what we needed with a couple guys down in the 'pen," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "If we continue to get shutouts, I know we'll fight our way back. Thirty or 40 days in a row, we're going to be all right."
Ryu beat the Rockies earlier in the year, holding them to two runs and three hits in six innings.
Colorado, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Jorge De La Rosa, who is 6-3 with a 3.16 ERA. De La Rosa has won his last four decisions, but did not receive one against the Houston Astros on Wednesday, despite a terrific effort that saw him surrender just a run and five hits in seven innings. He also walked a pair of batters and struck out four in his team's 2-1 win.
"I was feeling pretty good. The velocity stayed there all game long," said De La Rosa, who was 4-0 in five May starts with a 2./09 ERA. "Every pitch was working good and staying low in the zone. I wasn't tired."
De La Rosa's last loss came at the hands of the Dodgers and he is a miserable 0-8 lifetime against them with a 6.75 ERAS in 14 games (10 starts).
On Saturday, Dexter Fowler ripped a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Colorado to a 7-6 victory.
Yorvit Torrealba and pinch-hitter Wilin Rosario hit back-to-back, two-out singles to set the table for Fowler, who ripped the first pitch he saw from Matt Guerrier (1-2) down the first-base line to plate Torrealba for the deciding run.
Matt Belisle (3-2) spun a perfect top of the 10th to notch the victory.
Michael Cuddyer tied the game with a two-run homer in the seventh, while Carlos Gonzalez scorched a solo shot and an RBI triple to help the Rockies snap a three-game skid.
Tim Federowicz clubbed his first career home run and finished with three RBI, while Jerry Hairston and Skip Schumaker added an RBI and a run scored apiece for the Dodgers, who have lost three of their last four games.
Elsewhere on the injury front for the Dodgers, they could be without outfielder Carl Crawford on Sunday. The outfielder suffered a left hamstring cramp while legging out his second double of the game on Saturday.
"It's kind of getting ridiculous," Mattingly said. "The last couple of days, two outfielders (Kemp went on the DL two days ago), kind of our main guys."
The Rockies took two of three meetings with the Dodgers from April 29-May 1 at Dodger Stadium after losing 10 of the 18 matchups a season ago.
