Braves hope to break the brooms out on Bucs
Jun 5, 2013 - 1:53 PM (Sports Network) - Young Colombian righty Julio Teheran aims to complete a sweep on Thursday afternoon when the Atlanta Braves host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a three-game series at Turner Field. The Braves made it two straight on Tuesday night, when Andrelton Simmons knocked in the game-winning run in the 10th inning in a 5-4 triumph.
With runners on first and second and one out, Simmons cracked a fly ball to deep right field, scoring Dan Uggla without a throw.
"It feels pretty good," Simmons said. "I went up there and tried to battle and (got) the game-winning base hit, so that's pretty cool."
Simmons finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored, B.J. Upton hit a two-run homer and Freddie Freeman doubled and drove in a pair of runs for the Braves, winners in four straight.
Anthony Varvaro (3-0) worked a perfect 10th inning to pick up the win. Starter Mike Minor gave up four runs -- two earned -- on four hits while fanning six.
Gaby Sanchez and Pedro Alvarez each cracked a solo shot and Andrew McCutchen went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the Pirates, who have dropped four of their last five games.
"You're going to win some, you're going to lose some," McCutchen said. "We got the short end of the stick tonight. We just have to show up (Wednesday) and try to win."
Mark Melancon (1-1) was charged with the loss after giving up the game-winner. Pirates starter Jeff Locke was tagged for three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Teheran, a 22-year-old, has faced the Pirates twice in 17 big-league outings, including a five-inning starting stint on April 18 in which he got a no- decision in Atlanta's 6-4 win.
In that game, he allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings, and in two combined outings against the Pirates, he's allowed eight hits and struck out four in seven innings.
Teheran is 3-2 since the Pirates game, including a 3-2 loss to Washington in his most recent start on May 31, when he was nicked for three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
The Braves are 7-3 in his 10 2013 starts, but have lost three of the last four.
Pittsburgh replies with Dominican-born lefty Wandy Rodriguez, who'd won four straight starts before a May 31 loss to Cincinnati.
The 34-year-old defeated the New York Mets, Milwaukee, the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee again during the win streak, pitching at least six innings in three of the starts and allowing no more than three runs in any of them.
He allowed just two runs on five hits in seven innings of the loss to the Reds, striking out five in a 6-0 defeat.
Rodriguez is 4-3 in 13 career meetings with Atlanta, including a seven-inning effort in which he allowed a single hit in a 6-0 victory on April 19.
The Pirates took three of four from the Braves in a series played in April at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, and won the season series between the teams in 2012, 4-3. Atlanta won the 2011 series, 4-2.
