Teheran takes no-hitter into 8th, Braves blank Bucs
Jun 5, 2013 - 8:35 PM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Julio Teheran carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning as the Atlanta Braves blanked Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-0, on Wednesday to complete a three-game series sweep at Turner Field. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Brandon Inge laced a clean single to left field for the Pirates' only hit of the game.
"The thing is for someone like me sitting across I get to sit for eight innings and basically scout him for eight innings," said Inge, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning. "I couldn't see exactly what he how throwing, but I could tell what he was getting guys out with. I don't think any team wants to get no hit, so it was great I could get a hit."
Teheran (4-2) struck out 11, walked two and hit a pair of batters over eight innings to earn the win.
"I felt good today from the first inning. I had good communication with Laird and we mixed all the pitches well," Teheran said. "I was using more of my slider. I've been throwing my two-seamer a lot, but I didn't use it much today. I just kept them off balance."
Evan Gattis and Gerald Laird hit back-to-back solo homers in the sixth, while Chris Johnson and Dan Uggla added one RBI apiece for the Braves, winners in five straight.
Pirates starter Wandy Rodriguez (6-4) left the game with one out in the first inning with tightness in his left forearm. He gave up one run on two hits before exiting.
Atlanta pushed a run across in the first inning. With runners on the corners and Rodriguez still on the mound, Johnson grounded into a force out at second that was enough to score Andrelton Simmons and give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
Gattis and Laird hit back-to-back homers off Vin Mazzaro in the sixth to give the Braves a three-run edge. Atlanta then added a pair of runs in the seventh inning to account for the final margin.
Jason Heyward and Johnson opened the frame with back-to-back singles before Freddie Freeman grounded into a force out. Pirates first baseman Garrett Jones got Johnson at second base, but reliever Jared Hughes was unable to handle Clint Barmes' throw to first to complete a 3-6-1 double play, allowing Heyward to score.
After Gattis walked and Laird was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Uggla plated Freeman with a sacrifice fly to center field.
