Rizzo's clutch hit boosts Cubs over Angels in 10 innings
Jun 6, 2013 - 4:27 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Anthony Rizzo's three-run double in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Chicago Cubs over the LA Angels of Anaheim, 8-6, in the finale of a two-game series. With the score tied at five, the Angels sent Robert Coello (2-2) to start the 10th. Dioner Navarro walked, Darwin Barney singled and Luis Valbuena walked to load the bases with two outs. Rizzo then cleared the bases with a double down the right-field line. Jerome Williams recorded the final out to keep it an 8-5 contest.
"Just to be in that situation, there's nothing to lose. I got a good pitch to hit," Rizzo said. "It feels good to get the win."
Mark Trumbo homered off Kevin Gregg (2-0) with one out in the bottom half. Los Angeles went on to put runners on first and second, but Gregg got Hank Conger to go down swinging to end the game.
Cody Ransom hit a three-run homer for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game skid. Barney and Ryan Sweeney added an RBI apiece.
Chicago starter Matt Garza allowed four runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. Gregg picked up the win after giving up one run over 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Trumbo had two solo shots while Howie Kendrick went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer for the Angels, who went 3-5 on an eight-game homestand. Chris Iannetta and J.B. Shuck each knocked in a run.
Angels starter Jason Vargas gave up five runs on 11 hits over five-plus frames. The left-hander earned American League Pitcher of the Month honors for May after going 5-0 with a 2.30 ERA in his six starts last month.
"Give those guys credit, they got some key hits," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Offensively we did enough to win the game, but our pitching didn't get it done."
The Angels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second. Josh Hamilton led off with a double and scored on Kendrick's homer to right-center field. Later in the inning, Shuck appeared to hit a solo homer inside the right-field foul pole. The umpires decided to reverse the call following a review. Shuck then grounded out to keep it a two-run contest.
The Cubs got one run back in the third when Sweeney scored on Barney's groundout. Sweeney started the frame with a triple to right-center field past a diving Mike Trout.
Los Angeles tacked on two more runs in the fourth to make it a 4-1 game. Hamilton reached base on a fielder's choice and moved to third on Kendrick's base hit. With two outs, Iannetta and Shuck hit consecutive RBI singles. Shuck was picked off at first to end the frame.
Chicago quickly tied things up in the fifth on Ransom's homer. Navarro and Barney singled around the first out. Ransom followed with a blast over the wall in left.
The Cubs took the lead during their next at-bat. Starlin Castro doubled to left-center field and Navarro reached on an infield single, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Castro crossed the plate on Sweeney's bloop single to left. Michael Kohn and Scott Downs combined to retire the next three batters in order.
The Angels had a chance to tie the game in the seventh following right fielder Nate Schierholtz's error. Shuck reached third when Schierholtz dropped the ball at the warning track. After Trout walked with two outs, Albert Pujols got robbed of an RBI hit on a diving catch by Sweeney.
Trumbo homered off James Russell in the eighth to make it a 5-5 contest.
Both teams wasted golden scoring opportunities in the ninth. The Cubs left men on first and second, while the Angels stranded a runner on third.
