A's, White Sox kick off set in Chicago
Jun 6, 2013 - 2:56 PM (Sports Network) - Lefty Jose Quintana makes his second start against Oakland in a week on Thursday night when the Chicago White Sox host the Athletics in the opener of a four-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. The 24-year-old was shelled for 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings in the June 1 game in Oakland, but gave up only three runs while taking a no-decision in the Athletics' 4-3 win.
It was the 36th career appearance for Quintana, who debuted last year and was 6-6 in 25 games, including 22 starts.
He's been a full-time starter thus far in 2013 and won three of his initial four decisions before dropping a 7-0 verdict to the Chicago Cubs on May 27.
He's 2-2 in five home starts this season.
For the Athletics, righty Dan Straily gets a rematch with Quintana and the White Sox.
He allowed a run on six hits in six innings of the June 1 game while walking none and striking out eight.
He's gone three starts since his last loss - on May 15 against Texas - and has been very strong, allowing just 12 hits and two runs in 19 innings while walking one batter and striking out 14.
The Athletics are 6-2 in games he's pitched this season.
On Wednesday in Seattle, Alejandro De Aza drove home the go-ahead run in the top of 16th inning and the White Sox outlasted the Mariners, 7-5, at Safeco Field.
It was a contest that saw neither team score a run for the first 13 innings, then plate five apiece in the 14th to keep a contest going that eventually lasted 5 hours and 42 minutes.
White Sox closer Addison Reed (2-0) gave up a game-tying grand slam to Kyle Seager in the bottom of the 14th, but struck out the side in his third inning of work to end the marathon -- as well as Chicago's eight-game losing streak.
Alex Rios went 4-for-8, and his second RBI of the day gave the White Sox an insurance run in their final turn at bat. He also helped turn one of six double plays for Chicago.
On Wednesday in Milwaukee, Bartolo Colon pitched seven innings of one-run baseball and the Oakland Athletics defeated the Brewers, 6-1, in the finale of a three-game interleague series at Miller Park.
"It feels good to continue to pitch well," said Colon. "I feel a lot better pitching than I did last year."
The Athletics scored five runs in the seventh inning, capped off with a three- run home run by Brandon Moss. Josh Donaldson went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Jed Lowrie scored twice in the victory, Oakland's fifth in its last six games.
The Athletics swept three games from the White Sox in Oakland during a series from May 31-June 2.
