Rockies seek to extend series winning streak over Padres
Jun 6, 2013 - 2:58 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Jhoulys Chacin can maintain his team's perfect 2013 record against San Diego on Thursday night when the Colorado Rockies host the Padres to open a four-game series at Coors Field. The Rockies swept the first six games between the teams in 2013, taking three games in Colorado from April 5-7 and three more in San Diego from April 12-14.
Chacin was a winner in the April 13 matchup between the teams after tossing five innings of two-run ball in a 9-5 victory.
That win lifted him to 4-1 in nine career meetings with the Padres, against whom he has a 2.70 earned run average across 40 complete innings of work.
He's won just one of four decisions in seven starts since, however, and was nicked for five runs in six innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last start on June 1.
Chacin is 2-2 in six home starts this season.
For San Diego, Texas-born righty Andrew Cashner faces the Rockies for the second time this season, but the first in a starting role.
He allowed two runs on two hits in two relief innings of the Rockies' 6-3 win on April 6, part of a five-game stretch in which he appeared out of the bullpen.
He's since started eight times and win four of seven decisions, though he was beaten, 7-1, by Seattle in his most recent performance on June 1.
Cashner allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings of that game, swelling his ERA from 3.38 to 3.65.
He's 0-1 in six lifetime meetings with Colorado.
On Wednesday in Los Angeles, Jason Marquis took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the Padres held off the Dodgers, 6-2, to avoid a three-game sweep.
Marquis (7-2) allowed two runs on three hits while striking out six over 6 1/3 innings for the Padres, who snapped a three-game skid. The right-hander improved to 6-0 over his last eight starts.
"I think tonight, more than anything, we saw a legit sinker," Padres manager Bud Black said. "It was just a lot of sinkers and some good sliders down underneath."
Jedd Gyorko hit a solo homer and knocked in two runs for San Diego, which also got a pair of RBI from Yasmani Grandal. Jesus Guzman and Will Venable added an RBI apiece.
In Cincinnati, Carlos Gonzalez belted three home runs and racked up six RBI, while Troy Tulowitzki homered twice as part of a 5-for-5 night as the Rockies bombarded the Reds, 12-4, in the rubber match of a three-game series from Great American Ball Park.
Tulowitzki, who delivered a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning of Tuesday's 5-4 victory, finished with three RBI to help pace a 20-hit outburst that enabled the Rockies to win back-to-back road games for the first time since a three-game sweep in San Diego from April 12-14.
Nolan Arenado added four hits and scored three times, Todd Helton went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and even starting pitcher Jon Garland chipped in a pair of hits in the rout.
Garland (4-6) overcame a rough first inning to go six strong on the mound, allowing four runs on four hits to notch his first win since May 4. The veteran righty had been 0-4 over his last five starts.
