Padres, Rockies continue series at Coors Field

Jun 7, 2013 - 2:54 PM (Sports Network) - Dominican right-hander Edinson Volquez faces the Colorado Rockies for the second time this season and 10th time in his career on Friday night, when the San Diego Padres visit Coors Field for the second of four games.

Volquez was a 9-5 loser in San Diego when the teams met on April 13. He allowed six hits and seven runs in just 3 1/3 innings and fell to 3-5 in nine career meetings with the Rockies.

He's won four of six decisions since, including a 6-1 verdict at Seattle on May 28, when he gave up a single run on four hits in 7 2/3 strong innings.

One start since resulted in a no-decision in a game the Padres lost, 7-4, against Toronto.

Volquez is 2-2 in six road starts in 2013.

For the Rockies, streaking lefty Jorge De La Rosa aims for a sixth consecutive victory, both overall and at home.

The 32-year-old began the season with three losses in five decisions, but has since won five in a row, including a 7-2 defeat of the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 2, when he allowed six hits and two runs in seven innings.

De La Rosa has allowed just four runs in his last three starts, comprising 19 1/3 innings. He's allowed 17 hits and struck out 14 batters in the same stretch as his earned run average has fallen from 3.58 to 3.10.

He was a 2-1 winner over the Padres in San Diego on April 14 and is 5-2 against them in 16 career meetings.

Additionally, De La Rosa has won each of his five starts at Coors Field in 2013 while allowing just eight runs in 29 1/3 innings.

On Thursday, Yasmani Grandal pushed home the go-ahead run on a controversial play in the top of the 12th inning and the Padres took a 6-5 win.

Manny Corpas (0-1) looked like he was going to get an inning-ending double play ball when Grandal chopped a high grounder toward third with the bases loaded.

Nolan Arenado fielded the ball and stepped on third to record the second out, but his throw to first was deemed late by first base umpire Ed Hickox and the go-ahead run crossed the plate.

"We played well, we thought we had a good chance, we probably should have taken care of business earlier in the game, but we didn't unfortunately," said Arenado.

The Padres received two scoreless frames from Luke Gregerson (4-2) and saw Brad Boxberger lock down his first save of the season.

"There was some tremendous baseball along the way, there is no doubt about it" said Padres manager Bud Black. "Big clutch pitches, some big hits on both sides, some good defensive plays. It was a hell of a game."

The Rockies swept the first six games between the teams in 2013, taking three games in Colorado from April 5-7 and three more in San Diego from April 12-14.
