Halos rely on Weaver in Baltimore
Jun 10, 2013 - 2:32 PM (Sports Network) - Staff ace Jared Weaver makes his third start since a long stint on the disabled list Monday night, when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim visit Camden Yards for the first of three games with the Baltimore Orioles.A 20-game winner in 30 starts last season, Weaver was 0-1 after two starts this season before an injury shelved him until late May.
Weaver returned to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-3, with six innings of one- run ball on May 29, then allowed an earned run in six more innings while getting a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs on June 4.
He's 6-3 in nine career starts against the Orioles with a 2.76 earned run average across 62 innings, in which he's walked 12 batters, struck out 48 and allowed a .218 batting average.
Weaver, who is 50 games above .500 for his career - 103-53 - has won 50 of 110 career starts away from home.
For the Orioles, veteran Freddy Garcia meets the Angels for the 30th time in his 352nd big-league start.
The 36-year-old, who is also 50 games above .500 for his career - 154-104 - had won two straight starts against Toronto and Washington before falling, 11-7, at Houston on June 5.
The Astros tagged him for six runs in three innings of that loss, after he'd allowed just two earned runs in 13 combined innings against the Blue Jays and Nationals.
Garcia, who won seven games in 30 appearances last season with the New York Yankees, is 1-2 in four home starts in 2013.
On Sunday in Boston, Jarrod Saltalamacchia smacked a pair of homers and finished with four RBI as the Red Sox downed the Angels, 10-5, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Fenway Park.
Joe Blanton (1-10) continued to struggle, as the Angels right-hander gave up seven runs -- six earned -- on eight hits over five-plus frames in his third consecutive setback.
"I'm never frustrated. It is what it is," Blanton said. "I went out and did my best today."
Albert Pujols and Alberto Callaspo each clubbed a solo homer for the Angels, who have lost seven of their last nine games.
At Tampa Bay, J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones both finished with three hits and two RBI as the Orioles outslugged the Rays, 10-7, in the finale of a three-game set from Tropicana Field.
Nick Markakis and Alexi Casilla also drove in a pair of runs, while Manny Machado added an RBI and scored twice for the Orioles, who avoided a sweep thanks to a 16-hit attack.
"The American League East is tough," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "You've got to play nine innings, which our guys did. They kept adding on, or trying to, because it's hard in the major leagues. Things are going to happen."
Chris Tillman (6-2) tossed six innings and gave up three runs -- two earned -- on four hits with five strikeouts. Jim Johnson recorded the final out of the ninth for his 21st save.
The Orioles won three of four games with the Angels when the teams met in a series in Baltimore from May 2-5.
