Seattle sends Bonderman out against Angels
Jun 18, 2013 - 4:19 PM (Sports Network) - Jeremy Bonderman tries to follow up a pair of terrific outings on Tuesday when the Seattle Mariners continue a three-game series versus the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Angel Stadium. After giving up seven runs and failing to get out of the fifth inning of his first start, Bonderman has responded with a pair of sensational starts, surrendering just one run and six hits in 14 innings of those outings.
Bonderman was at his best on Wednesday against Houston, as he scattered three hits over eight scoreless innings. He also struck out five, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 6-1 loss, as the Mariners bullpen gave up six runs in the ninth inning.
"I felt good, but it's not my call to make," said Bonderman, who is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA.. "Tom (Wilhelmsen) is one of the best in the game. I don't have any problem with that move at all. Ninety-nine percent of the time, he's probably going to seal that down. It's part of the game. You take whatever happens. This game is never easy."
Bonderman is 3-4 with a 4.62 ERA in 13 starts versus the Angels.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, will counter with righty Joe Blanton, who is a miserable 1-10 on the year to go along with a 5.87 ERA. Blanton has followed up his lone win with three straight losses and was hammered by Boston his last time out back on June 9, as the Red Sox reached him for seven runs (6 earned) and eight hits in five innings.
"I'm never frustrated. It is what it is," Blanton said. "I went out and did my best today."
Blanton lost to the Mariners back on April 27 and is 8-6 lifetime against them with a 3.55 ERA in 16 starts.
Los Angeles drew first blood in Monday's opener, as Jason Vargas shut down his former team and was backed by 21 hits from his offense, as the Angels cruised in an 11-3 rout
Vargas (6-4) struck out nine and only walked one while giving up two runs on four hits to pick up a victory made easy by the offensive onslaught.
"I was able to locate my fastball, and my secondary stuff was working. ... And the guys were able to put a lot of runs up," Vargas said.
Albert Pujols, who struck out with the bases loaded to end Sunday's loss to the Yankees, bounced back with four hits, including an RBI double during a seven-run sixth inning.
Alberto Callaspo went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Josh Hamilton added a two-run homer to help the Angels improve to 3-1 on their 10- game homestand.
Aaron Harang (3-7) continued his Jekyll and Hyde season, as he lasted just five innings and allowed four runs on 12 hits just six days after recording his second shutout of the year.
Nick Franklin provided a two-run homer in Seattle's second straight setback.
Los Angeles has won four of seven matchups with the Mariners this season.
